MA and PhD degrees by thesis are taught within the broad areas of the Centre's interests: editorial theory and practice, and history of the book
Kym McCauley was the first postgraduate student to be involved in the Centre's activities. His PhD thesis entitled 'Collision/Collusion. Editing-Rhizomes-Hypertext' was accepted in 1999. The thesis focuses on editing, hypermedia archiving and Henry Lawson's manuscript materials for the 1896 Angus & Robertson publication While the Billy Boils.
Roger Osborne completed his thesis on textual criticism of Joseph Conrad's Under Western Eyes in 2000.
Thérèse Weber completed her PhD in 2001. It is an edition of Georgiana McCrae's diary of pioneering days in and around Melbourne.
Expressions of interest from final-year honours students are warmly encouraged. APA scholarships also apply to ADFA as part of the University of New South Wales.
Phill Berrie, the programmer for the MacCASE software, investigated a system of incremental encoding of SGML documents on demand, as part of his ADFA Masters of Information Science degree (1998). This work is aimed at solving a fundamental technical problem exposed by the Centre's Electronic Editions initiative. Berrie's proof of concept is based on the establishment of a single corrected base text, and any further markup being applied as required by the user's browser from command files which mark up the document on the fly. This paradigm reduces the potential for adding accidental variants to the original state while allowing for any and all future markup requirements by allowing open-ended development of markup command files. The Centre hosted Visiting Fellows on sabbatical or other leave. Such fellows were usually connected with one of the Centre's projects. Fellows included Dr. Rosemary Campbell (ANU), Dr. Chris Tiffin (University of Queensland) and Dr. Peter Robinson (Oxford and De Montfort). Prof. Peter Shillingsburg (De Montfort) visited in 2002 and Associate Professor Graham Barwell (Wollongong) in 2004. Dr. Bryan Coleborne was appointed Visiting Fellow for 2003-2006, as was Dr Roger Osborne (postdoctoral fellow, University of Queensland). Prof. Mary Jane Edwards (Carleton University, Ottawa) was a visiting fellow in March-April 2005.
