A Representative Listing of Australian and New Zealand
Critical Editions (Listed Alphabetically by Editor)

Kym McCauley and Paul Eggert

Please note: This is a working paper, not a refereed publication of the University College, ADFA.
We have sighted the critical editions listed. We wish to reiterate that the listing here is representative, not complete: we were looking for examples of critical editions which would demonstrate the range of activity carried out by New Zealand and Australian scholars. The editors are listed alphabetically, followed by the author's name and bibliographic details. We have made no attempt here to provide a full list of each editor's work.

Of the editions sighted we began to detect a difference between the higher number of editions of literary works which met our criteria as against those of historical documents. While we were unable to draw any firm conclusions, we suggest that the time is ripe for a more ambitious overview to be taken. Such an enquiry would, of course, be more fruitful if a larger listing enabling a fuller comparison of the fields were generally available.

The representative listing below may stimulate interest in the achievements of Australian and New Zealand critical editors over the last twenty-five years and should, we believe, give the Society considerable cause for satisfaction that this area of bibliographical interest has been so healthy in both countries.

The meaning of the term 'critical edition' used in this listing is discussed in the preceding essay. It is a more inclusive meaning than the term traditionally carries and equates to what has been loosely known as 'scholarly editing'. Editors need to have been based in New Zealand or Australia, or to have been born in either country.

To facilitate the listing the editor's name is listed first followed by the author and bibliographic details of each work included.
