Information on Tertiary Study for Staff
What assistance can the University College provide to attend tertiary and other education courses?
The course being studied must be relevant to the staff member's performance potential and the School's/Centre's and UNSW@ADFA's need and goals.
Subject to availability of funds, assistant may include:
- time off of up to eight hours per week for general staff to attend classes, inclusive of travel time (three hours of which must be made up through flex-time arrangements where eight hours is claimed), or up to ten days off to attend compulsory residential schools associated with distance education courses;
- examination leave;

- reimbursement of an agreed percentage of essential textbook expenses upon presentation of original receipts and a course booklist that designates compulsory textbooks.
What assistance can be provided for attendance at graduate fee-paying UNSW programs/courses?
Staff members of University College who are undertaking a UNSW graduate fee-paying course/program for staff development purposes at University College, or the Kensington campus, may apply to their Head of School/Centre to have tuition fees met partially or in full by the University College. This arrangement is subject to the following conditions:
- the program or course is one that attracts a tuition fee;
- the program or course is directly related to the staff member's employment and the member can demonstrate that it will be of benefit to University College; and
- in the case of a program of study leading to an award, the staff member's performance in the program must be satisfactory.
Depending on the individual circumstances there may be a liability for Fringe Benefits Tax and this will be charged against the School/Centre budget. Heads of School/Centre should refer to University College's Policy on Payment of Fees for Staff Undertaking Graduate Fee paying UNSW Programs/Courses (July 2000) for further guidance.
