Carl Thayer was educated in political science and Southeast Asian Studies, respectively, at Brown and Yale universities in the United States. He came to Canberra in late 1971 to undertake a PhD in International Relations at The Australian National University (ANU).
Jeffrey Grey was educated at the Australian National University and the University of New South Wales, where he completed his doctorate in history in 1986.
