Pre-sessional Academic Preparation Course

This course, which runs for several weeks before the start of each semester, is designed for postgraduate international students. It aims to:

  • welcome students to UNSW@ ADFA
  • prepare international students for the demands of academic study at UNSW@ADFA
  • familiarise students with the differing cultural expectations of teaching and learning
  • provide students with essential information about facilities and services such as the computer labs, library catalogues, subject specific databases and internet search facilities
  • give students practical experience in critical analysis, reading and note-taking, researching sources, avoiding plagiarism and writing assignments

By the end of the course, the international students are in a better position to know what to expect when their official coursework begins and are better prepared for the demands of their academic studies.  This preparatory course is a pre-requisite for enrolment in ZHSS 8119 Academic Discourse: Analysis and Writing.

ZHSS 8119 Academic Discourse 1: Analysis and Writing (6 credit points)

Designed primarily for international students, this course aims to enable students to study academic discourse and to develop the language skills necessary to read effectively and write appropriately in an academic context. The course will develop note-taking, paraphrasing and summary writing skills. Students will critically evaluate a reading specific to their particular disciplines, write a critical review and practise sentence and paragraph construction to develop their essay writing skills. Attention will also be paid to grammatical features, identified in the diagnostic test, which enable writers to convey meaning with greater precision. All applicants will be required to attend the pre-semester Academic Preparation Course and to undertake a written test to evaluate their English language proficiency in order to enrol in this subject.
