I am a postdoctoral research fellow at the Australian Centre for Cyber Security (ACCS) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Canberra. My work here involves tackling privacy and security problems from a user-oriented perspective. I am particularly interested in developing solutions to make security and privacy management easier for end users and also designing effective awareness mechanisms to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to them.
My research interests primarily focus on using technology to help users understand and implement necessary solutions to safeguard their security and privacy. My work is perennially challenged by the usability vs functionality trade-off and I consider this to be the central issue in my research. I believe that successfully encountering this trade-off is paramount in order to develop any security or privacy solutions which can be useful for people. I want my research to impact lives of people and therefore like to work with technologies and platforms used by the general population (such as social media, web security, etc.).
I completed my PhD at Lancaster University, UK in July 2017 (pending final corrections), where my work was focused on recommending access control decisions for social media users. I used machine learning to provide context-aware access control recommendations to social media users by leveraging the structure and size of their friend network in combination with the information about the content they were sharing. I have an M.Sc. in Cyber Security from University of Twente, The Netherlands, where the topic of my M.Sc. dissertation was "Permeance of ICT in Crime in India" where I examined the extent to which information and communication technologies (ICT) such as mobile phones and the Internet affect crimes such as burglaries and fraud (both online and offline). I worked closely with the police in Kolkata, India, and accessed their official case records for my research. I have a software engineering background owing to my Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree in Information Technology from West Bengal University of Technology, India.
