Australia's Vietnam War

The Australia’s Vietnam War website is the product of many years of work, starting with Andrew Ross’ creation of the 1 ATF Contact Database in the 1980s.

Development of the website as you see it today, commenced in late 2012 and the team continues extending its capabilities through the generous support of grants, donations and voluntary work by our team members and broader community.

On the website, you can see 6500 combat incidents involving Australian and New Zealand troops from the 1RAR battalion group and the 1st Australian Task Force. Clicking on an incident reveals detailed information including the date, time, location, unit involved, casualties and a description of the event. There are also over 2 million air sorties involving USAF, USN, USMC, Vietnamese, Australian and other aircraft; and 900,000 naval gunfire missions by ships of the USN, Vietnamese and Australian navies.

A range of filters can be applied to select air sorties and naval missions, including by aircraft type/ship name, target description, mission function, launch base etc.

Vietnam veterans can add their own accounts, including recollections, photos and other digital material to the website.

Our core team is based in Canberra, Australia and consists of members with academic and military backgrounds. We also have affiliation with other institutions, including Central Texas College.

Dr Bob Hall, the team leader can be reached at b.hall@adfa.edu.au. We also have a Facebook page, where you can follow us and keep up-to-date on our work.
