'Air Power in Small and Irregular Wars'

A Joint initiative of the Australian Centre for the Study of Armed Conflict and Society (ACSACS) UNSW Canberra and the Air Power Development Centre (APDC), RAAF

The Sir James Rowland Seminars honour the contribution of Air Marshal Sir James Rowland, former Chief of the Air Staff (1975-79), to the development and understanding of Australian air power. It is a forum aimed at bringing together air power practitioners, academics, Defence personnel, members of other government agencies, as well as students of armed conflict and international security to broaden understanding of air power as part of the nation’s defence and security.

Call for Papers

Proposals for presentations of 3,000 words (max.) are invited from established scholars, early career academic researchers, industry leaders, policy advisers and uniformed personnel of the ADF on aspects of air power and irregular warfare such as: effectiveness of air power, operational concepts, doctrine, logistics, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, targeting processes, logistics, air mobility and force projection. The seminar will also look at Australia’s experience of the past in employing air power in Irregular Wars.

Proposals addressing the topic of Air Power in Small and Irregular Wars should include the title of the presentation, a 300-word summary and a brief bio-data no later than 7 July 2017 to acsacs@adfa.edu.au

Advice to successful presenters will be send by the end of July. Presenters will be invited to convert their seminar presentations into a chapter for inclusion in the proceedings of the Seminar series for publication.

The seminar program will be posted on-line in the second week of August 2017.
