Credit into UNSW@ADFA Postgraduate Programs for Attendance at Professional Education Courses

Does UNSW@ADFA offer credit for attendance at Professional Education Courses?

UNSW@ADFA allows students who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 days of approved professional education courses (PECourse) to use those courses as credit in eligible postgraduate programs. In eligible programs students enrol in a course in a professional practice (professional education in ITEE) which has 2 main components:

• an essay in approved form to explore issues related to professional practice of a relevant discipline; and
• prior successful completion of 12 days of approved PECourse

What is an approved PECourse?

An approved PECourse is one that:

• contains at least one day (at least 6 hours) of course work;
• is delivered by a presenter, or presenters, that would be eligible for an appointment at an Australian University;
• is assessed by at least one hour of examinations for every three days of work; and
• is able to be verified by inspection of course and assessment materials.

Which UNSW@ADFA Professional Education Courses are approved courses?

A list of approved PECourses for each eligible program is in Table 1

Are approved PECourses offered by any other service provider?

A PECourse offered by a provider other than UNSW@ADFA may be considered for inclusion in the list of approved PECourses providing it meets the criteria for an approved PECourse. If the course in question is not already listed on the list of approved PECourses an application may be made to the relevant school. An application of approval must contain at least the following:

• evidence of the number of hours of work;
• evidence that the presenter(s) would be eligible for appointment at an Australian University (a brief CV of each presenter is required providing qualifications, background and experience);
• evidence of the assessment for the course (must be at least one hour of examination for three days of course work), including copies of previous tests and marking criteria; and
• a copy of the course materials (course notes and text)

What is an eligible post graduate program?

The following UNSW@ADFA postgraduate programs are eligible programs:

Masters in:

• Engineering Science (Electrical)
  
• Systems Engineering
• Science (Information Technology)
• Management Studies

Graduate Diploma in:

• Engineering Science (Electrical)
• Science (Information Technology)
• Management Studies

See Table 1 for a list of approved courses in each eligible program.

How is credit approved?

Students seeking to obtain credit for successful completion of approved courses are to contact the relevant School. With the approval of the School, students may then enrol in the relevant professional education course.

Does the opportunity for credit expire?

The regulations governing UNSW@ADFA postgraduate programs specify that credit towards a postgraduate program expires after a certain period. Currently this period is ten years.

Credit can be obtained for 12 days of approved Professional Education courses via the course ZITE8500 Professional Education. This credit is available in the programs;
MEngSci (Elec), MSysEng, GradDipEngSci (Elec), MSc (IT) and GradDipSc (IT).

Credit can be obtained for 12 days of approved Professional Education Courses via the course ZBUS8305 Professional Practice. This credit is available in the programs MMgtStud and GradDipMgtStud.

NB: MSysEng accreditation is valid from August 2008.
