Satellite Communications - Overview

Course Overview

This one-day course (which is also the first day of our Satellite Communications—Overview and Satellite Communications—Intermediate short courses) provides participants with a comprehensive overview of the issues associated with the design and provision of modern satellite communications systems.

Some basic familiarity with communications fundamentals is assumed as background knowledge for the course. Attendance at our Basic Communications Principles course is recommended for those who want to gain an understanding of the underlying communications principles before attending this course.

Attendees receive a comprehensive set of notes and a copy of the book Principles of Satellite Communications, Ryan, M., Argos Press, Canberra, 2004.

Who Should Attend?
Anyone requiring an overview of the basic principles underpinning modern satellite communications systems; business managers; project managers; project technical staff; systems engineers; engineers seeking technology refresh.

Professor Michael Frater, Dr Mark Pickering and Dr Michael Ryan

Dr Mark Pickering is a Senior Lecturer with the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, at UNSW@ADFA. . Since joining the University of New South Wales, he has lectured in a range of subjects including analogue communications techniques, and digital image processing. He has been actively involved in the development of the recent MPEG international standards for audio-visual communications. He is currently supervising several PhD projects including a joint project in conjunction with the Australian Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) on image understanding for surveillance applications. Mark holds Bachelor, Masters and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Electrical Engineering and has co-authored 12 journal papers and over 40 international conference papers on image processing, compression and communications.
