Successful Scholarship Applications
The DSARC would like to announce the following five successful scholarship applications: “Development of a diode laser sensor for high-speed flight testing” - Dr Sean O’Byrne, “An Operational Circulation and Ecology Forecast System for Jervis Bay, NSW” – Dr Hua Wang, “Molecular Fingerprint Spectroscopic Trace Gas Detection” – Dr Charles Harb, Surveillance Automation-Advanced Statistical Inference for Change Detection using Remotely Sensed Images” – Dr Xiuping Jia and “Development of Methods for Spatial Approximation and Prediction of Flowfields” – Dr Tapabrata Ray.
These scholarships are also listed in “Research Students” and an advertisement for each will follow shortly.
DSARC Complex Adaptive Systems Prize awarded at CAS June, 2006

DSARC awarded a prize during the Winter School on Complex Adaptive Systems: Theory and Practice (CAS 2006) run by the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE), in collaboration with the ARC Centre for Complex Systems (ACCS) and Research Network for Secure Australia (RNSA) from 26-June to 30-June. The competition among attendees at the Winter School was to write an essay of 250 words maximum describing a novel application of CAS in defence and security. During the Winter School dinner, Prof. John Baird, the Rector of UNSW@ADFA, Prof. John Arnold, HOS of ITEE, and A/Prof. Hussein Abbass, DSARC Director, presented the prize of AU$100 book voucher and certificate to the winner, Dr Peter Dunne from CSIRO. Successful Centre Launch - May 16
In an extremely successful event, the Security and Defence Applications centre was officially launched on May 16. The attendess, that numbered approximately 100, included members of defence, government, industry, and UNSW; including the VCDF Lt. Gen. Ken Gillespie and the parliamentary secretary to the minister for defence - Senator Hon. Sandy Macdonald.
The launch was held in the academy's officers' mess. The DVC (Deputy Vice Chancellor) Research Professor Les Field welcomed attendees on behalf of UNSW, and spoke of UNSW's strong research record.
The Vice Chief of the Defence Force, Lt. General Ken Gillespie gave the official welcome, and spoke to the links between the ADF and UNSW, as well as the science and technology needs of the ADF.
After an introduction to the centre by its founding director Associate Professor Hussein Abbass, the centre was officially opened by the parlimaentry secretary to the minister for defence, Senator Hon. Sandy Macdonald.
First Contract for Centre with Leadership Solutions Ltd.
As the concluding event of the official opening of DSARC on May 16, the first contract for the centre was announced.
The contract between Leadership Solutions Ltd. and DSARC shows the centre's commitment to work closely with defence and security industry Small Management Enterprises, not solely the ADF, DSTO, or the Australian government.
The project will undertake research that will lead to the development of an IT tool to assess leadership in a group.
