The AIF Project
The AIF Project has released a CD-ROM entitled First to Fall, which has details of all 621 Australians killed on the first day of the Gallipoli land campaign, 25 April 1915. If you wish to know more about it please proceed to the First to Fall page.
What is the AIF Project?
Includes details on all units, colour patches and ships of transportation.
When did the Project begin?
The Project began in 1987 as an academic historical investigation designed to answer questions and test hypotheses about the composition and experience of the AIF, not, as hitherto, on the basis of a tiny sample but drawing on comprehensive information relating to the whole of the AIF.
How do I obtain information from the database?
Printouts from the database on individual members of the AIF can be obtained on a fee-for-service basis. The fee for the basic service, is $30.00 (inc. GST), which provides a copy of all the information held on the database together with a consolidated statement of service suitable for framing (i.e. a 'certificate', but not one with any legal standing), together with a series of supplements about the history of the AIF. The AIF Project welcomes any additional information that an enquirer may be able to supply, such as details of the subject's place and date of birth, school, date of death and place of burial (as specifically as possible, i.e. 'Northern Suburbs Crematorium' rather than 'Sydney'), and the names and relationship of any other family members who also served in the AIF. (The AIF Project tries to cross-reference such relationships, brothers, cousins, uncles etc wherever possible.)
For the fullest printout, enquirers should first obtain a copy of an individual's service dossier from the National Archives of Australia at a cost (payable to Archives) of $16.20 (inc. GST). If this material in its entirety is sent to The AIF Project, we can extract substantial additional information to add to the database, and then return the material to enquirers. There is an online electronic order form for World War I service dossiers which is also available by writing to WW1 Personnel Records Service, PO Box 7425, Canberra Mail Centre, ACT 2610. The cost of adding this additional material is $10.00 (inc. GST).
Examples of printouts from The AIF Project can be viewed on our web site in the pictures section.
To order your printout, download and print the order form and send it in, together with payment. There are two version available for download. If the Microsoft Word version is incompatible with your computer, please try the rich text format version.
Payment to the AIF Project can be made by cheque or money order (made out to 'The University of New South Wales') or by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Bankcard only).
