Email List Management with Majordomo

The mailing list software in use at UNSW@ADFA is Majordomo.

To access the Majordomo list management page, go to: http://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/cgi-bin/maillist/majordomo from where it is possible to:  browse available lists; create a new list; delete a list or modify the configuration of any list by the list administrator.

List Cleanup (annual maintenance)

Every year, on or the third Friday in December, the owner of each list is sent an email requesting confirmation that the list is active and that the membership is current.

If no reply is received, the list is deleted on the last day of the following January.

List Creation

To create a new list select the CREATE button. Specify a name for the list; a meaningful description; an administration password and personal email address (e.g. j.bloggs@adfa.edu.au). The list is created, and ICTS is informed of the request. Within 2 working days of the request a confirmation email that the list is ready for use is sent following approval by ICTS.

Set up Info and Intro files as soon as possible after creation. This is information sent to new subscribers of the list and is set up from the MODIFY button.

List Deletion

To delete a list which is no longer required select the DELETE button. Note that this does not require ICTS approval and the list is removed as soon as the button is selected.

List Renaming

To rename a List, a new list with the new name must be created as the RENAME option in Majordomo does not work.

List Modification

A list maintainer has access to many features via the MODIFY button. Firstly, subscribers can be added and removed. Secondly, various configuration options (e.g. subscription policy, admin password, moderation status, pre-defined header and/or footers, etc) can be set and altered. Only the most common ones are displayed by default, however, there is a pull-down menu that displays all available options.

IMPORTANT: One setting that cannot be modified is “List Owner”. If the owner of a list leaves UNSW@ADFA, the list must be deleted and re-created (if the list is to remain active).
