This collection comprises research material collected by Hans Zwillenberg for his Master of Arts thesis entitled Citizens and soldiers : the defence of South Australia, 1836-1901, Department of History, University of Adelaide (1970). The papers include printed and photocopies of Parliamentary papers, government reports, book extracts, magazine articles, newspaper clippings; also included are letters and personal notes.

Biographical Note

Hans Joachim Zwillenberg was born on 3 December 1915 in Deutch Eylau Germany. He arrived in Sydney on the SS Niagaraon 20 November 1938, and became an Australian citizen in 1945. He enjoyed studying and was awarded the following qualifications: Librarianship (1954); Primary Metallurgy (1958); Bachelor of Arts (History, Politics and German Literature), University of Adelaide (1962); Master of Arts (Research Thesis in History), University of Adelaide (1971); and Masters of Arts (Research Thesis in History), University of New South Wales, Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra (1993).

After an extensive and varied career in South Australia, he and his family relocated to Canberra in 1968. He moved from the Department of Supply to the National Library of Australia in 1975, where he worked until his retirement in 1980. He had a distinguished career in his chosen field of librarianship, having been the Director Technology and later the Director of Science and Technology.

Zwillenberg was also interested in Australian military history, and he served in the Citizen Military Force (CMF) in South Australia from 1948 to 1963, and held the substantive rank of Major. His last appointment was as company commander for four years.

He was an active member of: Royal Australian Chemical Institute; Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; Institute of Information Scientists; Royal Institute of Public Administration; Australian Computer Society; Library Association of Australia; Australian Institute of Management; United Services Institutions of ACT; Missions to Seaman; Military Historical Society of Australia; and Church of England Girls' Grammar School Professional Officers Association Goethe Society.

Zwillenberg maintained a life-long interest in technology, and in 1985 he was awarded the Robert D Williamson Award for achievements in information science.

He died in Canberra in March 2000 at the age of 85.
