RESEARCH OFFICE REPORT

Static liquefaction of sand with consideration of fines

Last week Associate professor Robert Lo from the School of Aerospace , Civil and Mechanical Engineering (ACME) presented an invited paper titled "Static liquefaction with consideration of fines" to the International Conference on Disaster Prevention and Rehabilitation in Semerang.

(When the Research Office first read the title of the paper we thought about those bits of paper we collect when driving to the coast to escape Canberra winters! In this case, however, ‘fines' relates to ‘the silty and/or clay-ey' bits of the soil' – not those slips of paper delivered along with wailing sirens….). Now that ‘fines' have been defined…

ABSTRACT

Liquefaction is one of the most disastrous forms of geotechnical failure as the failure mass “flows” catastrophically for large distance. Studies in liquefaction have been largely based on clean sand, but in reality sandy soils contain fines. A number of theoretical issues related to liquefaction are addressed. Some findings of a recent experimental study at UNSW at ADFA for sand with fines, in particular the so-called reverse behaviour and critical state framework, are presented.

After the conference A/Professor Lo also had a 30-minute meeting with the Minister of Public Works, Indonesia , to discuss the formation of a Disaster Prevention and Rehabilitation Research Centre based in Indonesia .

…. and a date for your diaries

The next Faculty Seminar will be presented by A/Professor Hans Riesen from the School of Physical , Environmental and Mathematical Sciences (PEMS) on 15 Sept . The Faculty Seminars are preceded by afternoon tea at 3:15 with the 25 minute Seminar commencing at 3:40 with a 15 minute question time following.

(Note from the Research Office: Dr Riesen's research is fascinating and novel, but we also have it on good authority from one of his colleagues that he has the ‘recipe' for making emeralds. Despite our best efforts to date, he has refused to divulge this recipe – so we await the abstract for the Seminar with bated breath….)

UNSW Vice-Chancellor signs contract with Defence

On Friday 5 August, Professor Mark Wainwright, UNSW Vice-Chancellor, attended a ceremony to commemorate the signing of the agreement between UNSW and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for provision of educational courses in the Australian Command and Staff College (ACSC) Course, located at the Australian Defence College in Weston Creek, Canberra .

The four year agreement delivered in partnership with Media Gurus, the company that successfully tendered for delivery of the Media component of the ACSC, provides educational opportunities for middle ranking officers across the three services of the ADF.

We take great pride in knowing that we are contributing to the education of leaders at a variety of levels in such a vital area of the community', said Professor Wainwright.

Professor Wainwright noted that, the University of New South Wales had a very proud tradition of providing quality education to the ADF. He believed that the symbiotic relationship developed between Defence and the University over more than three decades was a powerful platform for future growth and mutual benefit.

‘It gives us the opportunity to use our unique skill set in educational areas of particular interest to Defence', Professor Wainwright said. ‘The expertise we have gained through our long-established relationship with Defence is reaching a critical mass and our staff are able to draw on this expertise to add value to Defence programs such as ACSC'.

The contract was signed by Brigadier Wayne Bowen, Commandant of the Australian Command and Staff College , Professor Mark Wainwright, UNSW Vice-Chancellor and Mr Prakash Mirchandani, Managing Director of Media Gurus.

Teaching and Learning Committee Workshops

Teaching & Learning Committee

August Workshops

If you're wondering how to revitalize your teaching and learning strategies this spring, come along to one of the up-coming workshops on creative and effective assessments. These are hands-on workshops: we will devise projects & tactics for engaging students in deeper, more active learning. The aim is to c ons truct targeted and challenging assessments, using feedback from students, which will also enhance student satisfaction with our courses and graduate satisfaction with their overall learning experience at ADFA.

Workshop 1: Assessment for Learning

Thursday 18 August 1:00 to 4.30 pm (coffee/tea break included)

IS Studio (CS154), Level 1, Building 15, School of ITEE .

Running out of fresh ideas for mind-expanding ways to assess your students?

Test out ideas for assessment strategies in an interactive, interdisciplinary workshop.

Workshop 2: Assessment and Plagiarism

Friday 19 August 9:00 to 12:00pm (Coffee/tea included)

Lunch and Plenary Session, 12 to 12.40

Seminar Room (CS152), Level 1, Building 15, School of ITEE

This workshop promises to elicit a fair amount of debate. Even co-facilitators James Warn and Michael Frater disagree with each other on the topic of avoiding a culture of plagiarism. Is detection the key to avoiding plagiarism? Or can assessment be c ons tructed to minimize plagiarism? We will also be looking at case studies and the student perspective. You'll come away from the seminar with new ideas for encouraging active learning.
