Message from the Rector

The School of Aerospace, Civil and Mechanical Engineering (ACME) took the SAE racing car to the Defence + Industry conference on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  The reaction from the Australian Defence Force and industry delegates was amazing.  The Patron of the team is Lieutenant General David Hurley who mentioned the car in his plenary presentation.  It was a great opportunity to advertise our postgraduate programs, since the 1000 or so participants represented the group who are most likely to be interested in our postgraduate opportunities.  I would like to thank all those who participated, and in particular Warren Smith, Head of ACME and the staff and students from ACME, Mike Palmer-Allen, Public Relations Manager, Danica Robinson, Manager of the Research Office and Robin Murden from Educational Technology Services.  One of the main issues discussed was skills shortages, and the need to ‘professionalise' the Defence Material Organisation.  The direction taken by the Defence Material Organisation will provide us with a range of opportunities in the future.

I would also like to invite all staff to attend the 2005 University Lecture which will be held on Thursday 1 September in Adams Hall at 5.30pm. This year our speaker will be Reverend Tim Costello, AO Chief Executive of World Vision Australia.

Professor John Baird
Rector

RESEARCH OFFICE REPORT

Successful Strategic Research Initiative(SRI) grants

….and some exciting developments on the PhD student front…..

Almost a year ago, postgraduate students Amy Dunlop and James Webb started their PhD studies with Dr Elanor Huntington in the Quantum Electronics Group in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE). Together, they are beginning the physical construction of a single photon source that will be used to test and develop principles in quantum computing and information.

Amy's source design incorporates both classical and quantum optics. The novelty of the source is that it will enable quantum bits (qubits) to be encoded in the optical frequency of the single photons. James has been working on single photon detection techniques and has verified two independent methods of measuring single photons. Amy has a background in physics while James's expertise lies in electrical engineering. Their skills complement each other and, pending a major disaster, the source should be operational six months from now.

Last week, visitors from the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) toured the group's lab and Elanor presented an overview of the group's accomplishments and future plans. The NSA funds part of the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Technology, of which the Quantum Electronics Group has been a member since 2003.

(During the regular prowls around the labs on campus, Research Office staff often wondered what went on in the darkened domain of ‘Huntington Lodge'. Now it apears there are students in there chasing a single photon around the room….)

ACT Fluids Seminar

Date: Tuesday, June 28, 2005
Time: 4pm
Title: Maximum-Entropy Velocity Profiles and Boundary Layer Theory in Turbulent Flow
Presenter: Dr Robert Niven, Senior Lecturer, University of New South Wales, Australian Defence Force Academy, School of Aerospace, Civil and Mechanical Engineering.
Location: Design Office, Lecture Theaters North, ADFA
See Building 32 on the map at http://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/images/adfamap.pdf .  Go up the stairs and the design office is near the middle of the group of theaters.

Abstract:
The maximum entropy method of Jaynes (1957) - as extended by Chiu and co-workers - is used to determine the "most probable" steady-state velocity profile u(y) in four systems of classical fluid mechanics: (i) axial flow in a cylindrical pipe (Poiseuille flow) (previously examined by Chiu); (ii) axial flow in an annulus; (iii) flow between moving parallel plates (Couette flow); and (iv) flow between rotating concentric cylinders. In each case, the analysis yields an analytical solution for the velocity profile over the complete spectrum of laminar to turbulent flow, as a function of the maximum velocity u[m] and "temperature of turbulence" M. In each case, the predicted profile reduces to the well-known laminar solution at M = 0, whilst for M > 0 it gives an equation which supersedes the semi-empirical correlations commonly used for turbulent flow profiles. The main steps of the analysis and the predicted profiles are presented here.

The analysis is then used to derive a new maximum-entropy laminar-turbulent boundary layer theory, for the velocity profile in steady flow along a flat plate. For M = 0, this reduces to the laminar boundary layer theory given in some texts, which approximates the Prandtl-Blasius solution to the Navier-Stokes equation. For turbulent flow, it yields a previously unreported closed-form solution.
