Message from Rector
This week has been a week of international visits. On Monday, the Indonesian Ambassador gave a seminar in the Indonesian Seminar series, and Prof Rainer Koch from Bundeswehr University, Hamburg visited the Academy to talk about Student Exchanges. On Tuesday I meet with visitors from Singapore and South Korea, and on Wednesday, a delegation from Ecoles Militaires de Saint-Cyr also visited to discuss exchanges. In part, this is evidence of the place that the Academy holds as a leading military educational establishment. It is also evidence of the internationalisation of education.
Last week I had the honour of launching the CrossSearch facility in the Academy Library. UNSW@ADFA staff have developed this outstanding search facility, accessing an enormous number of journals and other materials. I would encourage you to go the library website and try it.
Professor John Baird

Indonesian Ambassador visits UNSW@ADFA to discuss Tsunami Relief Operation
7 March 2005
The Boxing Day tsunami caused the deaths of up to 100,000 Indonesians in the province of Aceh alone. The tsunami crisis became a primary concern for the newly elected Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as well as the countries around the world.
The Australian government responded quickly to the disaster relief by offering a $1 billion aid package to Indonesia. The package is the largest donation/aid package ever made by an Australian government. Australian military personnel were sent to Aceh to assist in immediate relief operations and in the future Australia and Indonesia will be working in partnership on the reconstruction and redevelopment of Aceh.
The Indonesian Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Mr Imron Cotan, presented a seminar on the issue of the Tsunami Relief Operation in Aceh at the most recent Asia-Pacific Seminar Series held on Monday 7th March.
The ADFA Indonesian program was introduced on campus in 1999 and has grown successfully. It has now become one of the largest undergraduate programs in Australia. The option of studying Indonesian language is currently available for Arts, Science and Business students, resulting of an enrollment of 120-130 students in Indonesian language and culture studies every year.

Research Office News
Congratulations to Dr Graham Symonds from the School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences (PEMS) who has just been successful in winning yet another grant from the US Office of Naval Research (ONR). The proposal title - Development of an Operational Nowcast, Short-Term Forecast System for Nearshore Hydrodynamics and Bathymetric Evolution certainly sounds impressive…(but the Research Office – long envious of the exotic locations to which his reaseach takes him - wants to know why Dr Symonds is known as a ‘Beach Wizard’??. ) Dr Symonds’ work combines state-of-the-art modeling and field data collection capabilities in order to construct a more complete description of nearshore environmental conditions. These environmental properties are crucial to planning and implementation of naval operations related to mine counter-measures and amphibious landings. The proposed work should lead to improved nowcasts and forecasts of the nearshore environment, including estimates of prediction uncertainties.
Information on the actual state of the nearshore zone – in terms of topographic variability, surface waves, and circulation patterns - is crucial in many naval applications, including mine counter-measure strategies, amphibious landings, and covert military operations. This information is needed at an indefinite number of geographical sites encompassing a wide range of coastal environments, from low-energy shores with muddy substrates to high-energy beaches with a variety of sediment and bathymetric characteristics. Sophisticated numerical models that predict the hydrodynamics of these environments are just now reaching the level of complexity and numerical efficiency necessary for them to be used in an operational sense
These models are often needed on short notice requiring that general environmental conditions need to be quickly gathered and incorporated into the models. This often involves the prediction of wave transformation (from deep to shallow water), tide- and wave-driven currents, sediment transport rates, and the concurrent morphological evolution. Model skill is based on comparisons with field observations, but to date state-of-the-art surf zone models have shown limited forecasting capabilities. Assimilating field measurements in near real-time improves the models’ skill, and lengthens the predictive horizon, thus allowing for potential application of models in natural surf zones. In that sense, of particular interest are remotely sensed data, which can be obtained without interference with the environment. Such measurement capabilities have been developed using primarily video and radar observations, and include surface current measurements, wave breaking distributions, shoreline position, sand bar morphology, and wave phase speeds. Although these methods have largely been developed for shore-based applications, airborne platforms have also demonstrated similar measuring capability.
Congratulations to ITEE students
The Artificial Life and Adaptive Robotics Laboratory (ALAR) at the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, UNSW@ADFA, continues to have an excellent image internationally. ALL the papers (5 papers) that were submitted to GECCO 2005 were accepted. (In case you were wondering, GECCO is not a large version of those cute little lizards, but the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference) GECCO is also the largest conference on Evolutionary Computation and this year received more than 560 papers. It usually has an acceptance rate of less than 45%.
Professor Joseph Lai, Associate Dean (Research) would like to congratulate Dr Hussein Abbass and two of his PhD candidates, Helen Dam and and Lam Bui, as well as the new Research Associate Michelle McPartland, for getting their papers accepted. Dr Abbass in particular has emphasised his pride in the achievement of his students, and has stressed that this success is a well-deserved reward for their hard working.

1.1 Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The Employee Assistance Program is available to permanent (continuing and fixed term) full-time and part-time staff and civilian postgraduate students at UNSW@ADFA.
Your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a professional, confidential counselling service for employees and their immediate family members, paid for by your employer. It is free to you and your family.
An independent company called Davidson Trahaire Corpsych provides this service. Davidson Trahaire Corpsych counsellors are all qualified, experienced professionals who have extensive training in counselling and workplace consulting.
The EAP offers short-term, solution focused counselling. The counselling discussion is informal, friendly and focused on your needs and can be either face to face or over the phone, whichever is more convenient for you.
Counselling can help you to:
i) clarify a problem,
ii) identify options and
iii) develop plans to approach difficult issues in a constructive manner.
After counselling, your EAP counsellor may suggest that further assistance may be useful. If you choose to take up a referral outside of the EAP, you are responsible for any costs. Where possible, referral is made to a service that is free, or within your capacity to pay.

Defence Force Structure-Army 'Walk For A Cure' 22 -26 Nov 05
Various members of Defence Force Structure-Army (I will be attending) will be running/walking from Canberra to Sydney, via the coast road, during the period 22 - 26 Nov 05, in order to raise money for the ACT Cancer Council, in particular Breast Cancer Research. The activity will be called "Walk for a Cure' and will hopefully be advertised fully over the next few months.
One of the many ways we intend to raise money is by selling the ever popular 'Entertainment Book' amongst members of AHQ, their families, friends and anyone else who would like to support this worthwhile cause. The books run from 1 June - 31 May each year and should be available from March. The cost of a book is $50 each, with $10 of this amount going to our nominated charity.
The books have been well received in the past with hundreds of dollars worth of savings for events, services and restaurants within not only the ACT but Australia wide. If you need convincing, just ask those around you who had the books last year or contact me.
It would be appreciated if you could support the event by purchasing a book (or books), and also pass on the info to family and friends, with the intent of securing a pledge before they go on wide distribution to the ACT.
If you would like to purchase a book, please let me know by email so I can place the appropriate order.
