Message From the Rector
ADFA Concourse landscaping
Thank you to staff for their comments and suggestions for the proposed landscaping of the concourse area. All comments were forwarded to the Commandant for consideration. Below is an email from the Senior Landscape Architect, Mr Andrew Corp detailing the outcome of the deliberations.
"The current tree species proposed for the lawn area between the drives is now Pin Oak. As this is a larger growing tree species we have indicated 4 trees evenly spaced down the
lawn, where the previous drawing showed 6 trees. The London Plane tree is still to go into the old fountain area/planter bed.
Tree sizes currently specified (budget/tender prices may impact):
London Plane Tree - 1000 litre pot size - will be about 7+ metres tall
when planted.
Pin Oak - 400 litre - will be about 5+ metres tall when planted.
Obviously these are not the final tree heights of these species, we expect good growth over time with irrigation etc. These trees will need to be trucked in and probably craned into position. We think that with these tree sizes that the project will have a great impact from day one."

Research Matters
RESEARCH OFFICE REPORT
IMMIGRATION AND INTER-REGIONAL MOBILITY IN THE UK, 1982-2000
Congratulations to Timothy J. Hatton (University of Essex) and Massimiliano (Max)Tani from the School of Business, UNSW@ADFA who have recently had a paper accepted by The Economic Journal. The Economic Journal is the journal of the royal economic society(UK), the oldest journal in economics and one of the most prestigious.
ABSTRACT: The possible effects of higher immigration, raising unemployment and lowering earnings for locals, has been a contentious empirical issue and it has recently come to the fore in Britain. Most studies that look across local labour markets, chiefly for the US but recently for the UK, have found the effects of immigration to be benign. One possibility is that an influx of immigrants from abroad to a specific area simply pushes non-immigrants onwards to other localities and thereby spreads the labour market effects over the whole economy. We investigate this issue looking at net internal migration across 11 UK regions over two decades. While we find consistently negative crowding out effects, the results are not statistically very strong. Neither are they enhanced when embedded in a model that includes other variables that drive inter-regional migration or one that examines bilateral population flows between regions. We conclude that this particular channel of adjustment is fairly weak.
…and on a lighter reseach note…(with apologies to Sociologists)
Staff in the Research Office are the proud owners of a range of (well-thumbed) dictionaries, absolutely essential items when dealing with some of the texts which waft over our desks. So it is with some amusement that we discovered the following paragraph. We can’t include acknowledgements, as the author is anonymous – and there is absolutely NO truth to the rumour that the paragraph was drafted during a time of high stress when dealing with research applications….
SOCIOLOGY: For sheer lack of intelligibility, sociology is far and away the number one subject. I sat through hundreds of hours of sociology courses, and read gobs of sociology writing, and I never once heard or read a coherent statement. This is because sociologists want to be considered scientists, so they spend most of their time translating simple, obvious observations into scientific-sounding code. If you plan to major in sociology, you'll have to learn to do the same thing. For example, suppose you have observed that children cry when they fall down. You should write: "Methodological observation of the sociometrical behavior tendencies of prematurated isolates indicates that a causal relationship exists between groundward tropism and lachrimatory behavior forms." If you can keep this up for 50 or 60 pages, you will get a large government grant.
ADFA HUMAN RESEARCH ETHICS ADVISORY PANEL
The ADFA Human Research Ethics Advisory Panel (HREAP) can process ethics applications for any research projects with human participants involving minimal ethical impact. Applications can be sent to Paul Tranter (Convenor of the panel). The current panel members are:
Paul Tranter (Convenor) (PEMS)
Jenny Backhouse (ITEE)
Paul Eggert (HASS)
Frances Miley (Business)
Krishna Shankar (ACME)
The ADFA HREAP meets on the first Monday of each month. To be processed at the next meeting, applications should be submitted by the 20th of each month. Urgent applications can be processed more quickly if necessary. Application forms and information can be found at the following web site: http://www.ro.unsw.edu.au/ethics/human/.
Applicants are asked to mail one signed copy of the application (along with any supporting pages such as project description, questionnaires and participant information sheets) to Paul Tranter (PEMS) and to email an electronic copy of the application and supporting pages to Paul Tranter as well. (The application forms have been designed so that if you highlight a box, you can then type an “x”.)
If your research involves more than minimal ethical impact, follow the pathway for the HREC (Human Research Ethics Committee) applicants at the web page listed above. This web page will also provide information on whether your research is likely to involve “minimal” or “significant” ethical impact. Applications for the HREC should be sent to:
Ethics Secretariat
Research Office
Rupert Myers Building
The University of New South Wales 2052
If your research involves research with military personnel or research on a military base, you will also need to gain approval from the Defence Human Research Ethics Committee. A helpful contact is Rosemary Landy: rosemary.landy@defence.gov.au
Please feel free to seek advice on ethics approvals from any of the Ethics Panel members.
