Last Thursday 12 May we held an outstandingly successful Alumni cocktail function for UNSW graduates from both ADFA and Kensington. Invitations were sent to over 2000 UNSW graduates living in the Canberra area, and over 300 accepted the invitation. We also extended an invitation to the Chief of the Defence Force, General Peter Cosgrove and other senior military staff. Mr Geoff Lawson, cricket commentator, ex fast bowler and UNSW Council Member gave a very entertaining speech. The Chancellor, Dr John Yu and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Development), Professor John Ingleson (who is responsible for alumni matters) also travelled from Sydney to attend. The function was so successful that we hope to hold another next year. In coming years we will be seeking to maintain stronger links with our alumni, and functions such as this are a good way of doing that. A few weeks ago, Mr Mark Priddle joined us as the Student Recruitment Manager. Mark has been establishing contacts with Defence Force Recruiting and Manpower, the two organisations responsible for ADF recruitment. Mark has extensive university recruiting experience and our aim is to increase the interest in ADFA so that recruitment targets will be met in the future.
A number of people around the College have been very busy preparing material for a major Request for Tender for the delivery of training and educational services to the Defence Materiel Organisation. We have been collaborating with New South Global on the Kensington Campus to prepare the bid, and it will be very important to our future evolution if we are successful. Thanks to all those who have been preparing documentation.

UNSW@ADFA Alumni Event a Great Success!
A recent UNSW Alumni cocktail function staged in Canberra has been heralded as an outstanding success by all. The event was attended by over 300 UNSW graduates, University staff and Australian Defence Force VIP's, including guest of honor Chief of the Australian Defence Force, General Peter Cosgrove.
Former Australian Test Cricketer, media personality and UNSW graduate Geoff Lawson entertained the crowd in his role as the night's keynote speaker. UNSW@ADFA Rector, Professor John Baird said I am delighted by the response of local UNSW Alumni to the event. Nights like this provide an ideal opportunity to catch up with old class mates and for graduates to maintain contact with the University. We will be certainly looking at holding more events for Alumni in the future.

RESEARCH OFFICE REPORT
IRMRC visit to ADFA
The 2004 Engineering/ADFA research collaboration visits have generated both substantial interest and the possibility of further research collaborations. Most recently, the collaboration initiative resulted in a visit to ADFA by Professor Caroline Finch and her team from the Injury Risk Management Research Centre (IRMRC) to explore potential research collaborations. The IRMRC is an independent Centre of Excellence based at UNSW in Kensington.
IRMRC team members who attended the meeting (A/Prof Ann Williamson (Deputy Director), Dr Julie Hatfield (Senior Research Fellow Roads Safety) and Dr Andrew Hayden (Research Fellow Biostatistician and data management)) expressed interest in building further links with researchers at UNSW@ADFA. Researchers from ADFA who attended the meeting were Dr Hussein Abbass (Artificial Intelligence/Data Mining), Ms Sue Burdekin (Aviation Safety), Mrs Marion Burgess (Acoustics), Dr Amy Griffin (GPS/GIS), A/Prof Robert Lo (Geotechnical engineering and risk assessment), Dr Alan McLucas (Risk Management) and A/Prof Rod Weber (Bushfire CRC).
Professor Joseph Lai, Associate Dean(Research), hosted the visit and emphasised the mutual benefit of such visits in familiarising investigators with the current research undertaken on each campus.
SUCCESSFUL RIBG APPLICATIONS
On 11 May, the Faculty Research Grants Committee (FRGC) met to assess applications for the 2005 Research Infrastructure Block Grants (RIBG). The primary purpose of the RIBG is to provide funding for project - related infrastructure costs associated with the Australian Competitive Grants. Other objectives of the scheme include:
upgrading/replacing or purchasing new equipment to alleviate shortages in current research infrastructure;
improving support for areas of research strength; and
ensuring that areas of recognised research potential, in which institutions have taken steps to initiate high quality research activity, have access to the support necessary for development.
Professor Joseph Lai, Associate Dean (Research) and Chair of the FRGC congratulates the following UNSW@ADFA researchers on their successful applications.
Dr Russell Boyce, Dr Sudhir Gai, Mr Matt Garratt, Dr Rik Heslehurst, Dr Harald Kleine, Dr Andrew Neely, Dr John Milthorpe, Dr Neil Mudford, Dr Krishnar Shankar, Dr Tony Webb, Mr John Young (ACME), Dr Heiko Timmers (PEMS), Acquisition/Leasing of High Speed Multi-Purpose Video Camera : $50,000.00

Hiro Miyazaki, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Anthropology, Cornell University
Title: Replication as Technique of Hope: Toward an Anthropology of Financial Economics
Abstract
This paper aims to bring to light a variety of ways in which the utopian content of financial economics has served as a source of hope in the midst of Japan's long economic recession from the early 1990s to the present.
Drawing on ethnographic research among a team of Japanese financial derivatives traders in a major Japanese securities firm completed between
1997 and 2003, the paper chronicles a series of hopeful visions animating individuals' personal and professional choices. It draws attention to the way these traders have sought to extend the technique of replication, one of the most important analytical operations in financial economics, beyond the market. The paper seeks to explore the possibility of extending this analytical operation further as a method for writing a critical history of hope.
All welcome. Thank you.
