RESEARCH OFFICE REPORT
Anzac Conference Activity in School of H&SS – a multi-institutional undertaking devoted to the visual arts, military representations, museology and archiving practices.
For the best part of the last year a group of academics and curators from a number of ACT institutions have been working together to convene a conference devoted to aspects of photography, cinema and archives in connection with the traditions of Anzac, in this the 90th Anniversary year of the 1915 campaign. The conference will be held in late June or early July at the Australian War Memorial's Telstra Theatre, and is titled Re: (Imagining) ANZAC. The convening committee comprises, Jeff Doyle (Senior Lecturer, H&SS, UNSW @ADFA), Greg Battye (Head of Multi-Media, University of Canberra ), and Patricia Sabine (Head of Photographic Collections, Australian War Memorial). The conference is planned to be the first of series loosely managed under the heading The Sights of War Series to be brought together by the committee and other participants, such as Ian Howard, Head of the College of Fine Arts, UNSW Paddington campus, and staff from the AWM, the National Gallery and ANU. It would appear to be among, if not the, first multi- institutional undertaking of this kind devoted to the visual arts, military representations, museology and archiving practices.
The aim of the series of conferences is to critically examine the Anzac legend and its offshoots through the media of the visual arts, design, iconography and practices. The researchers hope to look at uniforms, camouflage, and weapon design in future studies. In this immediate first conference, the emphasis will fall mostly on photographic ‘truth' and warfare, and on a number of cinema representations of Gallipoli. The conference is lucky enough to include the showing of at least two documentaries including Wayne Fimori's stimulating Revealing Gallipoli (2004-5) - Wayne will also attend the showing - and a digitally restored print of Heroes of the Dardanelles . This short subject (approx 15 minutes) has been restored by Peter Jackson and his CGI-film company in the last few years – presumably in their spare time between making Lord of the Rings and moving on to King Kong. Turkish film director Tolga Ørnek whose stunning documentary Gallipoli (2004-5) has had recent select showings worldwide to much acclaim, is also likely to be at the conference – the organisers are still working on obtaining permission to show his film as well.
The conference will take place over two days and two evenings on a Friday and Saturday – dates to be confirmed shortly.

"Creating a Teaching Portfolio" Interactive Workshop May 12-13
Room 154, School of ITEE, Building 15, UNSW@ADFA
Last reminder to register for the workshop that will guide you through creating your Teaching Portfolio. Did we mention that it's a critical part of any promotion application? Did we mention that Professor Adrian Lee, Pro Vice Chancellor (Education) will open the seminar? Did we mention that you'll be introduced to teaching ‘coaches' that can help you navigate the effort of creating your own portfolio? Did we mention morning and afternoon tea comes with the deal?
The planned agenda is:
Thursday 12 May (1pm - 4:30pm)
In this half-day workshop participants will not only explore aspects of compiling/writing a teaching portfolio – learning and teaching philosophy, kinds of evidence, self-reflection – and how a teaching portfolio might be used, but how to get support from colleagues in reviewing and improving a portfolio. Participants will be introduced to a “coach” who can help review their portfolio.
Friday 13 May (9am - 12pm)
An essential component of improving your teaching at UNSW is through evaluation and reflection. CATEI represents only one form of (summative) student evidence. This workshop explores how you might profitably use CATEI to improve your teaching, what other forms of evidence you might use from students, peers, and self-reflection, and how to reflect that evaluation and improvement in your Teaching Portfolio
We will also be conducting a plenary session in the afternoon of 13 May. This session offers the opportunity for everyone to discuss the issues arising from the previous two workshops in the special context of ADFA and with reference to the place of teaching in the new UNSW promotions policies.
You will be able to create a draft of their own portfolios in the workshops to allow direct experience of the concepts outlined. For more details on Teaching Portfolios at UNSW, visit: http://www.ltu.unsw.edu.au/ref3-3-5_teaching_portfolio.cfm
