RESEARCH & RESEARCH TRAINING OFFICE REPORT

High Performance Bricks from Fly Ash

Dr Obada Kayali of the School of Aerospace, Civil and Mechanical Engineering (ACME), at the University of New South Wales at The Australian Defence Force Academy, was the recipient of the Best Paper award at the recent ‘World of Coal Ash' conference held in Lexington, Kentucky. The Barton A Thomas award is presented after the conference to the person whose oral presentation is chosen by a panel of judges to be the most outstanding of the conference. The award is sponsored by the University of Kentucky Centre for Applied Energy Research.

ABSTRACT: Bricks whose solid ingredient is 100% fly ash have been manufactured. The manufacturing process uses techniques and equipment similar to those used in clay brick factories. The bricks produced were about 28% lighter than clay bricks. The bricks manufactured from fly ash possessed compressive strength higher than 40 MPa. This exceeds some of the best of load carrying clay bricks available by more than 25% and is several times better than acceptable commercially available common clay bricks. Other important characteristics of the fly ash bricks have been evaluated. These included absorption capacity, initial rate of absorption, modulus of rupture, bond strength and durability. The values of these characteristics for fly ash bricks are excellent and have exceeded those pertaining to clay bricks. Moreover, fly ash bricks have been produced with a naturally occurring reddish colour similar to that of normal clay bricks. The new bricks and process have been patented and the new bricks have been given the name FlashBricks. This paper presents the results of testing and the advantages gained by this type of bricks over conventional clay bricks.

Professor Joseph Lai, Associate Dean (Research) would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr Kayali on this outstanding achievement. The total number of full papers presented at the Conference was in excess of 177 and the total of papers and posters were more than 255.

Research Office Move

The Research and Research Training Office has ‘upped stakes' and moved from the Administration Building . We may now be found on Level 3 in Building 21 (old Geography and Oceanography building).

(We had hoped to escape without advertising our new location, but Professor Joseph Lai, Associate Dean (Research), somehow discovered our nefarious intentions!)

Research Day Poster Competition

Students who wish to submit a poster for the Research Day Poster Competition must advise Geoff Brooks in the Research and Research Training Office (RRTO) by no later than 30 September of their intention to submit a poster. Geoff may be contacted on 02 6268 8112 or g.brooks@adfa.edu.au .

ETS have kindly offered their services in regard to the printing and laminating of posters to be entered in the competition. However, bearing in mind the advance notice which is necessary:

  • Students who wish to have their posters printed by ETS must provide ETS with the final pdf file of their poster no later than 7 October ; and
  • ETS will only print ONE poster per student and will only print posters submitted by students who have notified the RRTO of their intention to enter the poster competition.

Enable e-mail & Calendar services

Early in 2005 ASG's ICT Services rolled out the UNSW@ADFA e-mail system that is based on the Sun JES software that included calendar and personal address book (PAB). The recent upgrade to JES has made both calendar and PAB available to all users on the UNSW@ADFA system.

Since then ICTS has improved the functionality of Calendar to connect to your UNSW@ADFA mail account via a web browser from on-site or off-site. This web interface comes with a context-sensitive online help system that provides the necessary details on how to use all the features of the services.

Users of Microsoft Outlook 2000 or a later version will be able to access most of the JES functionality from within their Outlook mail client that includes:

  • Access to your UNSW@ADFA calendar
  • Access to your UNSW@ADFA PAB
  • Share your calendar with other people
  • Subscribe, view, and interact with, other peoples' calendars
  • Subscribe, view, and interact with, shared resources
  • Share your mail folders with other people
  • Subscribe, view, and interact with, other peoples' shared mail folders.

This functionality is also available within the new web interface for users of other e-mail clients or users that do not use the Microsoft Windows environment.

If you would like to have more information on how to have this functionality, please contact the ICTS Service Desk by email helpdesk@adfa.edu.au or telephone: 02 6268 8140.

PENFOLDS Grange Auction - 29 August to 7 October

RULES – lowest unique bid

The auction will be open to all ADFA Cadets, Midshipmen, military and civilian staff who ‘live or work' at ADFA.  The competition is not open to persons under the age of 18 as this would constitute supply of liquor to a minor and this is prohibited by statute and Defence Instruction.

The prize is a bottle of 1999 Penfolds Grange, (hereinafter referred to as the Prize) currently worth $400.

Aim: The entrant who makes the lowest unique bid will be declared the winner. Entrants making bids are to guess the lowest unique figure in whole cents that the bottle might be sold for.  More than one bid of the same value will void all bids of that value.  The successful entrant will then have the option to purchase the Prize for the value of their winning bid.

Bidding: The following rules apply to bidding:

a.            Each bid will cost $2.

b.            Entrants are to place their written bid, their contact details and the $2 fee in the envelope provided.

c.            Entrants may make more than one bid per envelope, as long as a $2 fee accompanies each bid.  Therefore, a person making 5 bids will pay $10.

d.            There is no limit to the number of bids that can be made by one person.

e.            Bids are to be made in ‘whole cents', ie a bid of $1.37 can be made as 137c.

f.             Once the bid is announced at Sportsman's Ball, the figure will be rounded to the nearest five cent mark for payment; ie 137c will be 140c.

g.            Bidding is open to ADFA Military members and Civilian Staff, contractors working at ADFA, and UNSW@ADFA academic and general staff.

h.            Bidding will commence 0800 h Mon, 29 Aug 05.

i.             Bidding concludes NLT 1200 h Fri, 07 Oct 05.

j.            Bidding will be adjudicated by SOCM.  SOCM's decision on the winning bid is final and no correspondence in regards to the result will be entered into.

k.            In the event that there is no valid unique bid, the Prize will be up for auction on the night of Sportsman's Ball.  Bidding will commence at the reserve set by the highest invalid unique bid.  The ‘contingency' auction will only be open for those who attend Sportsman's Ball.

6.         Bids are to be placed in locked entry boxes located in the ACM, the Duty Desk in the Mil Building and at the ADFA Café.

7.         The winner will be announced at the Academy Cadets Ball on the 8 th October 05.

8.         All monies raised will go towards the 2005 Graduation Ball and Half Grad Party.

Although the participation of women in the workforce has increased over the last twenty years, decisions regarding career choice, career breaks, whether to undertake part-time or casual work, and divorce, have placed women well behind men when it comes to retirement savings.

This seminar will provide information specifically for women by outlining a range of tips and strategies to help women clarify and reach their retirement savings goals. Strategies such as qualifying for the government co-contribution, salary sacrifice, and spouse contributions will be discussed, along with useful information on the advantages of UniSuper membership such as access to low cost insurance, and UniSuper products, such as the UniSuper spouse account.
