RESEARCH OFFICE REPORT
PEMS STARGAZERS GAZE AT DUSTY DISKS
Dr Warrick Lawson of UNSW@ADFA's School of Physical , Environmental and Mathematical Sciences (PEMS), has been using NASA's Earth-orbiting Spitzer Space Telescope to measure the infrared spectra of dusty disks surrounding very young stars. Spitzer offers a sensitivity at infrared wavelengths that is unobtainable using telescopes on the ground, and it surpasses all previous space missions too. The disk results have been extraordinary, but at the same time they were not so unexpected. Some of the disks have spectra that look almost identical to comet spectra observed in our own solar system, in particular 'primordial' comets that are thought to be making their first passage through the inner solar system.
Other than water and carbon dioxide ices, the primary composition of the disks and comets is various forms of silicates, such as the olivenes. (Olivenes, for those of us not familiar with the term, are a very common mineral, magnesium iron silicate (Mg,Fe) 2 SiO 4 (hope I got that right!) occurring commonly in olive-green to grey-green masses as an important constituent of basic igneous rocks. At least, that's what the dictionary says….)
Silicates are a major component of the Earth's mantle as well.
The link between young disks, comets and the Earth is this:…..4.5 billion years ago the Earth and the comets that grace our solar system were formed from disk material surrounding the then-young Sun. Now using Spitzer, we can sample the chemical make-up of circumstellar disks around very young stars that are only a few millions of years old, so they're roughly a thousandth the age of the Sun. Those young disks are composed of the same sorts of material as we see in our solar system, and in all likelihood they're forming their own silicate-rich comets and planets right now.
Dr Lawson will present a Seminar on his work in this area at 11:10am on Friday23 September in the PEMS South building (Rm P25).
AUSTRALASIAN RESEARCH MANAGEMENT SOCIETY ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) has just conducted a most successful 3 day conference in Canberra . Special thanks must go to A/Prof Robin Prior for his participation in the ‘ARMS Great Debate' titled ‘An Illusion of the Future: That too great a percentage of research funding is going to the sciences' . Robin's argument (against a worthy opponent in Prof Malcolm Gillies (DVC Education) of the ANU) was particularly remarkable in that it ensured over 250 delegates remained riveted to their seats - even at the very end of an intensive conference. (However, this member of the ARMS organising committee feels obliged to make a correction to Robin's persuasive rhetoric. Those individuals in black who roam across Australia with ‘Chubb' emblazoned on their uniforms, are not members of a V-C's private army….)
Research Day Poster Competition
Students who wish to submit a poster for the Research Day Poster Competition must advise Geoff Brooks in the Research and Research Training Office (RRTO) by no later than 30 September of their intention to submit a poster. Geoff may be contacted on 02 6268 8112 or g.brooks@adfa.edu.au .
ETS have kindly offered their services in regard to the printing and laminating of posters to be entered in the competition. However, bearing in mind the advance notice which is necessary:
- Students who wish to have their posters printed by ETS must provide ETS with the final pdf file of their poster no later than 7 October ; and
- ETS will only print ONE poster per student and will only print posters submitted by students who have notified the RRTO of their intention to enter the poster competition.

PENFOLDS Grange Auction - 29 August to 7 October
RULES – lowest unique bid
The auction will be open to all ADFA Cadets, Midshipmen, military and civilian staff who ‘live or work' at ADFA. The competition is not open to persons under the age of 18 as this would constitute supply of liquor to a minor and this is prohibited by statute and Defence Instruction.
The prize is a bottle of 1999 Penfolds Grange, (hereinafter referred to as the Prize) currently worth $400.
Aim: The entrant who makes the lowest unique bid will be declared the winner. Entrants making bids are to guess the lowest unique figure in whole cents that the bottle might be sold for. More than one bid of the same value will void all bids of that value. The successful entrant will then have the option to purchase the Prize for the value of their winning bid.
Bidding: The following rules apply to bidding:
a. Each bid will cost $2.
b. Entrants are to place their written bid, their contact details and the $2 fee in the envelope provided.
c. Entrants may make more than one bid per envelope, as long as a $2 fee accompanies each bid. Therefore, a person making 5 bids will pay $10.
d. There is no limit to the number of bids that can be made by one person.
e. Bids are to be made in ‘whole cents', ie a bid of $1.37 can be made as 137c.
f. Once the bid is announced at Sportsman's Ball, the figure will be rounded to the nearest five cent mark for payment; ie 137c will be 140c.
g. Bidding is open to ADFA Military members and Civilian Staff, contractors working at ADFA, and UNSW@ADFA academic and general staff.
h. Bidding will commence 0800 h Mon, 29 Aug 05.
i. Bidding concludes NLT 1200 h Fri, 07 Oct 05.
j. Bidding will be adjudicated by SOCM. SOCM's decision on the winning bid is final and no correspondence in regards to the result will be entered into.
k. In the event that there is no valid unique bid, the Prize will be up for auction on the night of Sportsman's Ball. Bidding will commence at the reserve set by the highest invalid unique bid. The ‘contingency' auction will only be open for those who attend Sportsman's Ball.
6. Bids are to be placed in locked entry boxes located in the ACM, the Duty Desk in the Mil Building and at the ADFA Café.
7. The winner will be announced at the Academy Cadets Ball on the 8 th October 05.
8. All monies raised will go towards the 2005 Graduation Ball and Half Grad Party.

Application of Acoustics to Replicate High Quality Stringed Musical Instruments
Ra Inta, Research Officer, Acoustics &Vibration Unit UNSW@ADFA
WEDNESDAY 28 September 2005
18.00 to 19.00 (refreshment from 17.30)
Lecture Theatre 8, Lecture Theatres North, UNSW@ADFA
Jointly arranged by Aust Acoustical Society and Aust Institute of Physics
Despite its long history, the practice of making high-quality stringed instruments is still considered a `dark art' and remains largely a cottage industry. The development of techniques is generally the result of trial-and-error and replication of any particular high quality instrument has a variable success rate. Consequently, there are a growing number of makers who recognise that techniques used in acoustics could be applied to improve the probability of reproducibility. Ra Inta will discuss and demonstrate aspects of his PhD work in Physics at UNSW on the guitar and violin, including characterisation of materials and testing of the musical instruments at various stages of construction. There is evidence that some techniques used by instrument makers are surprisingly well optimised.
Please advise Marion Burgess, m.burgess@adfa.edu.au by 26 September of your intention to attend the meeting.
