RESEARCH & RESEARCH TRAINING OFFICE REPORT
UNSW Engineering & UNSW@ADFA Research Collaboration Initiative
The above UNSW@ADFA/UNSWKensington initiative provided seed funding of up to $30,000 per project to promote research collaborations between researchers from UNSW Engineering and UNSW@ADFA. The scheme enabled researchers to develop their research to be competitive nationally in terms of quality and/or ability to attract external funding.
Integrated Online Health Monitoring System for Effective Maintenance of Structures
Dr Krishna Shankar, Prof Don Kelley, Mr Murat Tahtali, A/Prof Khosrow Zarrabi, Dr Sreenatha Anavatti, Dr Andrew Neely, A/Prof Alan Crosky.
Aircraft operating beyond their design life has become the “norm” these days, making it imperative to develop efficient, reliable and cost effective tools for assesment of structural integrity and damage monitoring. Researchers from the School of ACME , School of Mechanical Engineering UNSW and the Materials Science and Technology Faculty have collaborated on a project titled “Integrated Online Health Monitoring Sydtem for Effective Maintenance of Stuctures”.
Traditional tools of non destructive evaluation such as eddy current, radiography, ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing are time consuming and costly. These tests are only applicable to periodic ground based testing, lacking the ability to detect damage when it occurs or monitor its growth during flight. This project involves the assessment of two promising NDI techniques: Acoustic Emission and Vibration Monitoring, for On line Structural Health monitoring. Engineering at UNSW Kensington is studying the application of the AE system while researchers from ACME are examining the use of vibration moitoring with piezoelectric sensors to detect the inception and monitor the progression of damage in real time. After separate development and assessment, the two techniques will be brought together as a combined Online Health monitoring technique to cover a broader spectrum of defects and more effective damage assessment. UNSW@ADFA has a PhD student working on the project, who is currently engaged in developing finite models with simulated damage to generate numerical data for the assessment algorithm. Some experiments of vibration measurement with piezoelectric sensors have also been undertaken.
Tests are planned at UNSW Kensington Engineering for damage assessment using acoustic emission (AE). Due to the limited funding granted to the project, Engineering at Kensington was unable to procure the acoustic system originally planned, but some AE equipment available at UNSW@ADFA is currently being updated and recommissioned for possible loan to Kensington Engineering under the Collaboration Initiative to conduct their Acoustic Emission tests.
Congratulations to Dr Elizabeth Greenhalgh
Professor Joseph Lai, Associate Dean (Research) would like to congratulate Dr Elizabeth Greenhalgh on her recent award from the Australian Academy of the Humanities. Elizabeth's Humanities Travelling Fellowship for study abroad in 2005-2006 will enable her to to carry out work in the United States and Belgium for her project A study of the Military Command of Marshal Ferdinand Foch during the First World War.

National Ride to Work Day - 5 October
Next Wednesday (5 October) is the National Ride to Work day.
There will be a morning tea/coffee for all riders at the ADFA coffee shop, from 9.00am.
Experienced and novice riders equally welcome. We especially hope this will encourage some people to get that old bike out of storage. These spring mornings are beautiful on a bike.
Thanks to the Rector's Office and ADFA/RMC Coffee shop who have generously sponsored the breakfast/ morning tea ( muffin and a coffee ) for the first 50 riders registered.
For catering purposes, please let Ida (i.nurhayati@adfa.edu.au, x88910) or Ted (e.catchpole@adfa.edu.au, x88895) know if you are a definite/probable/possible particpant.
There will be lucky draw prizes for all riders who register beforehand or at the morning tea.
See you next Wednesday at the coffee shop.

Qantas Domestic Check In Policy
Effective 01 September, Qantas have begun enforcing a strict domestic check-in cut off for passengers who have check in luggage. If you are flying domestically on Qantas and have checked baggage, you must complete check-in at least 30 minutes prior to the plane's departure to ensure making the flight. Qantas are enforcing this policy now to ensure more stringent security measures are covered, including the x-raying of every bag. Passengers have been denied boarding because they arrived, with luggage, to check-in, 25 minutes prior to the flight's departure.

ITEE Seminar - 5 October
Title: High Speed, High Sensitivity Photodetectors
Speaker: Dr Greg Milford, ITEE, UNSW@ADFA
Date: Wednesday 05 October
Time: 11:00 - 12:00
Venue: Building 15 - Rm 152
Abstract: Experiments in the development of optical quantum computer technology sometimes require highly sensitive photodetectors with wide bandwidths. In this talk we will outline some of the work undertaken in the School of ITEE on the development of multi-GHz bandwidth photodetectors with up to 10~dB shot to dark noise ratio. Traditional microwave low noise amplifier design techniques are used to design the transimpedance amplifier, thereby minimising thermal noise generation in this amplifier stage. The PIN photodiode is embedded in the amplifier circuit by absorbing its equivalent circuit impedance into the amplifier input matching network. Methods to characterise the photodiode and other lumped element components are discussed, as are issues on simulation and fabrication of the photodetector circuit.
