Message from the Rector

University Lecture

Thank you to all staff who were able to attend the University Lecture last Thursday evening given by Rev Tim Costello on 'Ethical Leadership. Staff and students who attended seemed to enjoy the lecture very much, and it no doubt contributed to our goal of providing our Officer Cadets and Midshipmen with a liberal and balanced education.

Thanks to all involved but particularly to Tess Blakers for her role in organising one of the major events of the University's year.

ADFA Open Day - 27 August

A big thank you to everyone from the University and Military who contributed towards making ADFA Open Day 2005 such a success. It was pleasing to see those who attended on the day were geninuely interested in attending ADFA.

RESEARCH OFFICE REPORT

Platinum – and anti-cancer compounds

When staff in the Research and Research Training Office think of ‘Platinum', they think of things like jewelry – lots of expensive jewelry. A/Professor Grant Collins from the School of Physical , Environmental and Mathematical Sciences (PEMS), though, has an entirely different (and far more humanitarian) perspective. A/Prof Collins' work using platinum anti-cancer compounds is cutting-edge research which has been funded by The project has been funded by Unisearch, Professor Nick Farrell and funding from the Faculty Research Grant Program (FRGP).

Encapsulation of the Spermidine Linked Dinuclear Platinum Complex BBR3571 by Cucurbit[n]uril:

Multinuclear platinum anti-cancer compounds appeared to offer great potential, as they are highly active in cancers that are sensitive and resistant to treatment by standard platinum drugs (which are among the

most widely used anti-cancer agents). However, clinical trials have shown that they are extremely toxic and most of the drug is degraded by plasma proteins.

A/Professor Collins and his collaborators have shown that multinuclear platinum complexes can be encapsulated in a family of molecules called cucurbiturils. Encapsulation in cucurbiturils reduces toxicity and reduces binding by plasma proteins

Initial in vivo trials have shown that encapsulation does not significantly reduce the anti-cancer activity of the multinuclear platinum drug

A/Prof Collins and Dr Anthony Day (also from PEMS) have an international patent application filed (Jan 2005) in collaboration with Prof Nick Farrell (USA) the inventor of multinuclear platinum complexes

Faculty Seminar- 13 September

UNSW Staff Ph D Completion Scholarship and UNSW Equity Initiative Grants 2006

Applications are now being sought for the 2006 rounds of the above mentioned initiatives.

UNSW Staff PhD Completion Scholarship. This Scholarship aims to support UNSW staff whose progress towards PhD completion has been substantially affected by family, carer or community responsibilities or disability. The Scholarship will provide funds to schools or centers to enable staff who are within six months of completion to be released from teaching and administrative duties in order to bring the doctorate to completion. It is available to UNSW academic staff, and to general staff who are working in a research-related position.

Please note that following a review of the Scholarship, eligibility criteria and application procedures have changed. Applicants are now expected to have a reasonable chance of completing the PhD within the period of the Scholarship. In addition, the roles of the Head of School and Associate Deans (Research) have been amended (see Attachment 2). All eligible staff are encouraged to apply.

Applications must be lodged with the Equity and Diversity Unit by 30 September 2005. Academic and research only women who are currently undertaking their doctorial candidature at UNSW have already been contacted about the Scholarship.

UNSW Equity Initiative Grants . The University has provided $50,000 for 2006 as seed funding for the development of initiatives aimed at redressing the under-representation of women in academic positions in schools, faculties and centers. Applications for grants of up to $10,000 are currently being sought. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis to areas that can demonstrate a relevant project which addresses some aspects of academic gender imbalance, and which has support within the School/Center. Past grants have developed a range of exciting initiatives and I would strongly encourage you to consider possible projects in your School or Faculty. Applications are due on 28 October 2005.

Copies of guidelines and application forms and further information on both these initiatives can be obtained from the Equity and Diversity Unit by calling 02 9385 5210.

PENFOLDS Grange Auction - 29 August to 7 October

RULES – lowest unique bid

The auction will be open to all ADFA Cadets, Midshipmen, military and civilian staff who ‘live or work' at ADFA.  The competition is not open to persons under the age of 18 as this would constitute supply of liquor to a minor and this is prohibited by statute and Defence Instruction.

The prize is a bottle of 1999 Penfolds Grange, (hereinafter referred to as the Prize) currently worth $400.

Aim: The entrant who makes the lowest unique bid will be declared the winner. Entrants making bids are to guess the lowest unique figure in whole cents that the bottle might be sold for.  More than one bid of the same value will void all bids of that value.  The successful entrant will then have the option to purchase the Prize for the value of their winning bid.

Bidding: The following rules apply to bidding:

a.            Each bid will cost $2.

b.            Entrants are to place their written bid, their contact details and the $2 fee in the envelope provided.

c.            Entrants may make more than one bid per envelope, as long as a $2 fee accompanies each bid.  Therefore, a person making 5 bids will pay $10.

d.            There is no limit to the number of bids that can be made by one person.

e.            Bids are to be made in ‘whole cents', ie a bid of $1.37 can be made as 137c.

f.             Once the bid is announced at Sportsman's Ball, the figure will be rounded to the nearest five cent mark for payment; ie 137c will be 140c.

g.            Bidding is open to ADFA Military members and Civilian Staff, contractors working at ADFA, and UNSW@ADFA academic and general staff.

h.            Bidding will commence 0800 h Mon, 29 Aug 05.

i.             Bidding concludes NLT 1200 h Fri, 07 Oct 05.

j.            Bidding will be adjudicated by SOCM.  SOCM's decision on the winning bid is final and no correspondence in regards to the result will be entered into.

k.            In the event that there is no valid unique bid, the Prize will be up for auction on the night of Sportsman's Ball.  Bidding will commence at the reserve set by the highest invalid unique bid.  The ‘contingency' auction will only be open for those who attend Sportsman's Ball.

6.         Bids are to be placed in locked entry boxes located in the ACM, the Duty Desk in the Mil Building and at the ADFA Café.

7.         The winner will be announced at the Academy Cadets Ball on the 8 th October 05.

8.         All monies raised will go towards the 2005 Graduation Ball and Half Grad Party.

“ Rough Diamond": A Review of "Damage Tolerance" for Aircraft Structures ”

Steve Swift, CASA

6pm, Tuesday 13 th September 2005

Military Lecture Theatre, ADFA

The August edition of AeroNews announced that the September lecture would be delivered by Mr Bruce Byron, CEO of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Unfortunately Mr Byron will now be unable to be present in September. Another CASA staff member, Mr Steve Swift, will speak to the Branch on the subject of damage tolerance for aircraft structures.

Steve Swift of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) will present the Paper he first gave to the International Committee on Aeronautical Fatigue, in Germany , in June 2005. With his counterpart from the United States Federal Aviation Administration, Bob Eastin, he reviewed whether "damage tolerance" is delivering the safety envisioned when it became the preferred fatigue management method for large civil airliners.

Steve and Bob laud the method, which they call the "diamond". It is more valuable and versatile than first thought. It was a breakthrough. However, they find it so cluttered and poorly regulated that many reject it and others misuse it. The diamond is "rough". They recommend "cutting and polishing", by simplifying the diamond and its rules.

Steve Swift is Principal Engineer, Airframe Durability, for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. He is based in CASA's Canberra headquarters. Before joining CASA in 1984 Steve worked for Hawker de Havilland in Australia , and Boeing and McDonnell Douglas in the US .

Bob Eastin is Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor for Fatigue and Damage Tolerance for the United States Federal Aviation Administration. He is based in the FAA's Los Angeles office. Before joining FAA in 1997 Bob worked for McDonnell Douglas.

As usual refreshments will be available in the Officers Mess before the meeting and Members are reminded to get a security pass from the Duty Desk adjacent to the Military Theatre unless they wear a photo ID issued by ADFA, ADF or a Defence contractor. Those who would like to continue discussions after the presentation are most welcome to join the committee and the speaker for dinner at a venue to be decided on the night.
