Senior Management Retreat
A group of Senior Managers and Heads of Schools will meet with military counterparts for two days next week. This meeting is held annually to facilitate the continuing development of the close collaborative working relationship between UNSW and the Military component at ADFA. From my experience we now enjoy a closer working relationship than ever before. I would like to thank those on both sides who continue to contribute to cooperative spirit that exists.

Professor John Baird
Rector

RESEARCH & RESEARCH TRAINING OFFICE REPORT

Successful Research Infrastructure Block Grants (RIBG)

On 10 February 2006, Heads of School were requested to review their infrastructure requirements and submit a well-argued case for funding under the RIBG scheme. The total ADFA RIBG allocation for 2006 was $133,076, of which $40,000 was provided as UNSW@ADFA's contribution to the Australian Literature Gateway.

The primary objective of the RIBG Scheme is to meet project-related infrastructure costs associated with Australian Competitive Grants. Other objectives of the scheme are to:

•  remedy deficiencies in current research infrastructure. Applications seeking equipment must be accompanied by formal quotations from the suppliers;

•  enhance support for areas of research strength; and

•  ensure that areas of recognised research potential, in which institutions have taken steps to initiate high quality research activity, have access to the support necessary for development.

Recommendations for funding were made by the Faculty Research Grants Committee (FRGC) after careful consideration of the ten requests received from across three Schools. Professor John Baird (Rector) and Professor Joseph Lai, Associate Dean (Research) congratulate the following researchers on their successful applications:

Adding Optical Diagnostic Capabilities ( $30,000); Researchers and projects benefiting from this proposal will be: Dr S O'Byrne, Dr R Boyce, A/Prof S Gai, Dr A Neely, Dr H Kleine and Dr N Mudford

Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer ( $30,186); Researchers and projects benefiting from this proposal will be: A/Prof Hans Riesen, A/Prof G Stewart, Prof S Campbell, Dr W Hutchison, A/Prof J Croke, Dr L Wallace, Prof R McLean, A/Prof R Lo, Dr R Niven, Dr O Kayali and A/Prof S Yeomans

Proposal for an Automatic Particle Size Analyzer ( $32,890); Researchers and projects benefiting from this proposal will be: A/Prof J Croke, Dr K Amos, Dr Ingrid Takken, Prof R McLean, Dr j Shen, A/Prof R Lo, Dr R Niven; Dr Obada Kayali and Dr R Gnanendran

Faculty Seminar May 9: DSA: UNSW@ADFA's new Defence and Security Applications Research Centre - A/Prof Hussein Abbass

The Defence and Security Applications Research Centre (DSA) is a newly established UNSW research centre to be located in Building 21 at UNSW@ADFA (the ‘Research Hub'). The establishment of this Centre emerges from UNSW@ADFA strategic research directions in the area of Defence and Security Applications, and demonstrates the commitment of UNSW Senior management to supporting UNSW@ADFA's role as the premier undergraduate education provider for the Australian Defence Force.

In his talk A/Professor Hussein Abbass will introduce to the audience the concept of the Centre, his vision on the operations and role of the Centre within UNSW@ADFA. He will also place special emphasis on the potential opportunities which the Centre may provide for academic staff members at ADFA. The talk will conclude with a timeline of the Centre's activities over the next 6 months, after which the floor will be open for discussion and feedback.

The Faculty Seminars are held in SL1 (Bld 21). Refreshments will be available from 3:15 and the seminar commence at 3:40pm. After Hussein's presentation time will be available for questions and feedback. All staff and research students are encouraged to attend. Faculty Seminars provide a great opportunity for networking across all Schools at UNSW@ADFA . Please RSVP to Elvira Berra at e.berra@adfa.edu.au or on 88112 by Friday 5 May. (RSVPs are greatly appreciated – they certainly help when organising the catering.!!)

The Research Quality Framework: Information Session by the Deputy Vice-chancellor (Research)

Many questions surround the Research quality Framework: Is it coming? If it is, what will it look like? When will it arrive? What is UNSW doing to prepare for it? What impact will it have on me?

Professor Les Field, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) will answer these and other questions at the ADFA CAMPUS at 2:30pm on Thursday 27 April in LT1, Lecture Theatre South

The information session is open to ALL STAFF. No RSVP required.

...and more wonderful work from a wandering student...

Avid readers of the Newsletter know that the Research and Research Training Office keeps in touch with our ‘wandering' students wherever they may be. This interest is not (as has been unkindly - but accurately - intimated) to ensure the students are not enjoying themselves too much: rather, the interest is piqued because the benefits of their travel has produced some simply brilliant outcomes. Chris Roberts from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS) is one such incredibly productive student, so we'd like to share a ‘snip' from his recent email:

On the publishing front I completed a 46,000 word monograph on ‘ASEAN's Myanmar Crisis'. It is being reviewed at the moment by a regional publishing house. I also published a 10,000 word working paper at IDSS on ‘The Engagement of Myanmar: A Clash of Contending Moralities'. That one is also being reviewed for publication in a major journal. I have an assistant entering in my survey data and after that is complete I hope to produce a ‘marker article' (also another chapter) based on the insights that will stem from at least several hundred surveys – the first study of its kind in the region ever!

I depart for Indonesia on Wednesday and have confirmed meetings with some senior officials in ASEAN as well as some of the heads for the Centre for Security and International Studies. I will also be meeting with the Australian embassy, the UN departments and hopefully various officials in various departments of the Indonesian government.

(PS - We're glad he's not enjoying himself too much.....)

LIFESTYLE PLANNING WORKSHOP  -   Judy Cole Coaching

WORKSHOP / COURSE OVERVIEW

Helping Pre-retirees plan their Retirement Lifestyle
The things that most happily retired people have in common is a healthy positive attitude and a clear image or plan of how they want the retirement phase of their lives to be.

While many approaching retirement age have taken financial planning advice, few invest time and energy planning the nonfinancial aspects of retiring. Many underestimate the impact this significant change will have on them, and with hindsight, wish they'd planned it better.

The goal of this workshop is to encourage attendees to take responsibility for creating a retirement they'll love. It will stimulate their self-awareness, discuss their belief systems around retirement, give advice on making a smooth transition, and examine eight important areas to consider when putting in place a Retirement Plan for the next 20 plus years of their life.

Attendees must bring a pen and an open mind.

TIMING AND DURATION
This workshop/course is designed as 4 sessions allowing for lively discussion.
It should run:

9.00-10.30 (20min tea/coffee break)
10.50-12.30 (1hr lunch break)
 1.30 -  3.00 (20min tea/coffee break)
3
.20 -  5.00 (close)

RESOURCES AND TRAINING AIDS
The workshop is intended to be highly interactive, with maximum participation through brainstorming, awareness questionnaires and exercises.
