Message from the Rector

We are now in the home stretch towards the end of the year and our Degree Conferral Ceremonies. As this will be the last bulletin before Graduation, I encourage all academic staff to participate in the ceremonies by joining an academic procession into Adams Hall. Participating in our graduation ceremonies gives you the opportunity to be involved in one of the happiest and most memorable occasions of a student's life at UNSW. The UNSW@ADFA Degree Conferral Ceremonies will be held on Wednesday 13 December 2006. The times of the two ceremonies are:

10.00am – Business, Humanities and Social Sciences

2.30pm – Engineering, Science and Technology

Those wishing to take part in the Academic Procession please contact Pauline Baragry on ext 88727 as soon as possible.

In addition, following on from these ceremonies on Wednesday evening, we also celebrate Prizes and Awards Night which commences at 6.00pm. Staff wishing to attend this event should RSVP to kerry.neall@defence.gov.au or call extension 88607.

I anticipate that there will be one more newsletter produced for 2006. Given that it falls due in the middle of the Graduation ceremonies, it will be sent out in the final week before Christmas.

Professor John Baird
Rector

UNSW@ADFA involvement in the Carrick Discipline-based Initiatives Scheme ($100,000)

Congratulations to A/Professor Iain Densten from the School of Business

Professor John Baird (Rector) and Professor Ian Petersen /g Associate Dean (Research) are very pleased to note the involvement of A/Professor Iain Densten in the above grant.

The grant, which will be administered by the University of Sydney, aims to research, review, identify and scope key issues in teaching and learning for the Business discipline. The investigation project will establish the availability of existing resources, identify disciplinary strengths, gaps and challenges to be addressed and propose measures for which additional funds will be sought to improve the quality of the student learning experience and learning outcomes in the Business discipline. Key outcomes for this grant are to address contemporary and future-oriented challenges to higher education, namely inclusiveness, globalization, internationalization, collaboration, generic and discipline specific graduate capabilities, quality assurance and effective and revitalized discipline leadership. The project seeks to be truly collaborative by both endorsement by, and engagement of, the Australian Business Deans Council, and is actively engaging the majority of Australian Universities in the research process.

Engineering/ADFA Research Collaboration Scheme 2007

The Rector and the A/g Associate Dean (Research) are pleased to announce a new round of the UNSW@ADFA - UNSW Faculty of Engineering Research Collaboration Scheme. This continuation follows the previous successful scheme initiated in 2004 which saw a total of $164,000 distributed to 14 collaborative projects. In this new round of the Engineering/ADFA Collaboration Scheme a total of $150,000 will be available for distribution to collaborative research projects. These projects can either be continuations of previous collaborations or completely new proposals.

As in the previous round, the scheme will begin with researchers from each campus taking part in reciprocal visits. To receive funding under this scheme, it is a requirement that the researchers take part in these visits.

The first visit will involve researchers from the UNSW Faculty of Engineering visiting the ADFA campus on Monday 19th Feb and returning to Sydney on the morning of Tuesday 20th Feb. The second visit will involve researchers from UNSW@ADFA visiting the Kensington Campus on Wednesday 21st Feb and returning on the morning of Thursday 22nd Feb. For UNSW@ADFA researchers, the cost of bus transport and accommodation will be covered by the Faculty.

Additional details including the timetables and program of events for each visit will be available in the near future. Expressions of interest are essential if you are interested in taking part in this scheme. If you are interested in participating, please send an email to Douglas Macnicol at d.macnicol@adfa.edu.au by Monday 4 Dec.

Changes to Faculty Research Grants Program (FRGP)

As of the beginning of 2007, UNSW@ADFA will replace the Faculty Research Grant Program (FRGP) with a "Silver Star Scheme" which will allocate the FRGP funding to eligible unsuccessful ARC Discovery applicants. This change has been endorsed by the Senior Management Committee and approved by the DVC (Research).

The Silver Star Scheme will be conducted along similar lines to the UNSW Gold Star scheme but with a reduced funding level. All funds previously allocated to FRGP will be allocated to the Silver Star Scheme and will only be available to unsuccessful Discovery applicants in a similar way to the Gold Stars.

The amount allocated to a Silver Star grant will be the same for all awards and will be in the range $20,000-$25,000 depending on the total amount allocated and the ARC outcomes. The successful UNSW@ADFA Silver Star grants will be selected after the UNSW Gold Star grants have been announced. Selection will be on the basis of the ranked list of UNSW@ADFA unsuccessful ARC Discovery applicants until the 2007 FRGP allocation has been expended.

This announcement is being made now to give all those researchers who have previously relied on FRGP grants a chance to prepare strong Discovery grant applications. The internal deadline for Discovery grant applications will be advised in the near future but is expected to be in the first week of February.

FRGP projects awarded for funding in 2007 will not be affected by this change.
