Staff Bulletin

The Newsletter will now be published on a fortnightly basis. If you have something you would like to contribute, please download and complete the submission form and email the information to newsletter@adfa.edu.au by 12 noon on the Wednesday prior. The website will be changed to reflect Fortnightly news rather than weekly as show above.

Nominations are called for the Rector’s Commendations

Students and staff are invited to recognize excellence in an aspect of teaching by nominating UNSW@ADFA academics for the mid 2006 round of Rector’s Commendations. Rector’s Commendations recognise excellence in one aspect of teaching, rather than the overall general excellence in teaching required for the more comprehensive UNSW@ADFA Teaching Awards.

Nominations will be accepted in, but are not restricted to, the following categories.
(A)Excellence in Classroom Teaching
(B) Excellent Innovation in Teaching
(C) Excellent use of Technology in Teaching

Team nominations will be considered where the teaching initiative has involved group effort and development of team approaches.

Nominations, identifying the category of teaching excellence, should be sent to the Presiding Member of the UNSW@ADFA Teaching and Learning Committee before 14 August 2006.
Dr James Warn, School of Business, j.warn@adfa.edu.au

Based on received nominations, the TLC will invite short-listed staff to provide a brief document (2 pages) outlining their teaching methods and achievements and, after consideration of that evidence, will recommend to Rector those staff whom it believes should receive an award. Recipients will be awarded their $500 prize and certificate outlining the basis of the commendation at a UNSW@ADFA Academic Board meeting.

What's coming up next from ETS STePs?

ETS workshops, seminars and training events aren't all about WebCT! For instance, did you take note of our eJournal Seminar? (1030-1200, LT8, on July 13: More …)

Podcasting Prospects

In our next “brown bag” or “lunchtime special” event, ETS staff provide a briefing on Podcasting and some related prospects for its use here at UNSW @ ADFA.

Have you thought about ways that you could make educational use of those little MP3 players and iPods that you see your students wearing? What kind of materials could be distributed as small sound or video files? How does this technology work, basically? Are there particular purposes that might be worth pursuing using it?

Come along and turn this into a discussion. All are welcome, no registration is required.

When and Where? 1215-1300, Thursday July 27, Library Seminar Room

But wait… there could be more!

We're also incubating a number of other ideas and planning, given sufficient indications of support, to run further sessions that may be of interest to you. Some possibilities:

  • A workshop on Quicktime VR
(creating virtual reality panoramas and interactive objects)
  • A panel discussion led by your colleagues “Let's Talk About Online Discussion”
(an exchange based on local experience on how to motivate, organize and manage online discussion)
  • A ‘lunchtime special' on the Simple Use of Scenario
(Enrich your online course by creating a ‘back-story' that motivates, makes more relevant and provides a natural structure)
  • A guest speaker on Authentic Online Learning Environments
(How can we make our non-physical learning environments more real… and more engaging? How do students operate in these ‘places'?)
  • Consideration of ways to Add Personality to your Website

Let us know which of these ideas pique your interest and help guide our energies. This all runs under the banner of ETS STePs (our Support for Teaching Program). STePs is there to help people interested in making better use of educational technology support.

Want to express interest, offer involvement or are you just after more information?

Visit the ETS Website ( www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/ets ) and follow the ‘Events and STePs' link or contact James Meek, Flexible Learning Developer: extension 88213 or via email.

HASS Does it Again

The Australian Historical Association links together all academic historians and others involved in history research and writing. The Association holds Biennial Conferences and this year it was Canberra's turn to conduct the conference at the Australian National University last week. The History Discipline of HASS involved in its financing, planning and conduct.

Eleanor Hancock was on the organising committee and our friends from the Australian War Memorial presented a number of sessions on military and war histories, some of which were chaired by Jeff Grey. Frank Cain arranged the panel for one session that compared the two Liberal Party-led governments of Sir Robert Menzies and John Howard. The panel consisted of Malcolm Mackerras who made a comparison of the electoral strategies of the two Prime Ministers; Frank Cain discussed the use of the intelligence community, particularly ASIO, by the two leaders; Richard Broinowski compared the foreign policies of the two governments and Stuart Harris compared the economic policies of the two leaders. Shirley Ramsay assisted with the management of the conference. Nearly 200 people attended including many Canberra citizens.

The Mystery of Modulation Side-Bands Observed in Mechanical Systems

1200 - 1300, 14 July
Room 225, Building 17

Raj Singh
The Donald D. Glower Chair in Engineering
Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering
Director, Acoustics and Dynamics Laboratory, Center for Automotive Research
The Ohio State University, USA
Web site: http://www.autonvh.org/

Abstract

Side-band structures are commonly observed in measured vibro-acoustic spectra of many mechanical elements and rotating systems such as gears, bearings, fans, motors and tires. Though the modulated spectral contents are often utilized to develop algorithms for fault detection and preventive maintenance and to trouble shoot practical noise and vibration (or sound quality) problems, several aspects of the problem (including the sources) are somewhat mysterious. Kinematic, Trigonometric, Fourier and/or Communication theories are often used to identify the existence of frequencies but they can not seem to explain the amplitude behavior, including the asymmetric nature (or disappearance) of some sidebands. A dual-domain periodic differential equation with an implicit non-linearity will be presented to plausibly explain the underlying physics. Analytical predictions, based on a force modulation concept, will be compared with dynamic (rotational) measurements on a gear pair. Finally, an acoustic duct experiment will be briefly described where two active control algorithms are employed to suppress the amplitude or frequency modulated signals. Yet the mystery continues!
