Message from the Rector
Colleagues,
Professor Richard Henry, Acting Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education
and Quality Improvement) and Mr Peter Graham, Chief Operating
Officer will be visiting UNSW@ADFA on Friday 4th August.
The new Vice-Chancellor Professor Fred Hilmer will be making an address to all UNSW@ADFA staff at 3:30pm on Tuesday 8 August in Lecture Theatre 7. He will be setting the scene for the future directions of UNSW. I encourage all staff to attend.

Nominations are called for the Rector’s Commendations
Students and staff are invited to recognize excellence in an aspect of teaching by nominating UNSW@ADFA academics for the mid 2006 round of Rector’s Commendations. Rector’s Commendations recognise excellence in one aspect of teaching, rather than the overall general excellence in teaching required for the more comprehensive UNSW@ADFA Teaching Awards.
Nominations will be accepted in, but are not restricted to, the following categories.
(A)Excellence in Classroom Teaching
(B) Excellent Innovation in Teaching
(C) Excellent use of Technology in Teaching
Team nominations will be considered where the teaching initiative has involved group effort and development of team approaches.
Nominations, identifying the category of teaching excellence, should be sent to the Presiding Member of the UNSW@ADFA Teaching and Learning Committee before 14 August 2006.
Dr James Warn, School of Business, j.warn@adfa.edu.au
Based on received nominations, the TLC will invite short-listed staff to provide a brief document (2 pages) outlining their teaching methods and achievements and, after consideration of that evidence, will recommend to Rector those staff whom it believes should receive an award. Recipients will be awarded their $500 prize and certificate outlining the basis of the commendation at a UNSW@ADFA Academic Board meeting.

CALL FOR PAPERS
[Note to UNSW@ADFA potential participants: please email dsa@adfa.edu.au if you are interested in this event to coordinate contributions from UNSW@ADFA.]
The Operations Research HUB will conduct a logistics workshop on 29-30 August 2006 at DSTO Edinburgh. This is a call for participation in the workshop titled "Improving Logistics".
The objective of the workshop is to provide a forum for exchange of analysis methodologies and applications pertaining to improving logistics, in particular Defence logistics:
? application of hard and soft operations research to design, study and test of networked systems, logistics-related NCW, and logistics systems, including logistics information and control systems;
? mathematical tool suites used for the modelling and simulation of logistics processes and functions, such as maintenance / reliability, transport / distribution, loading, warehousing, modularisation / containerisation / packaging, waste management / disposal;
? approaches to cost-capability trade-off and risk analyses of supply and transport capabilities;
? comparative studies of commercial and Defence logistics, and of effectiveness-based and efficiency-based system optimisation; and,
? logistics decision support systems and operations analysis as applied to current and future logistics systems, concept evaluation, and technology projection, including tools for planning, execution monitoring, simulation, wargame and experimentation.
While logistics is the key focus of the workshop, contributions are also sought from scientific areas of relevance to logistics. These include - but are not restricted to - the following: network theory; social networks; Markov chains and processes; complex systems theory; Petri nets; health and utilisation monitoring; and Defence experimentation.
This workshop aims to bring together practitioners of logistics systems analysis and operations researchers from Defence and academia. An electronic version of abstracts in MS Word format should be submitted by Friday 4 August 2006 to
Hub.registration-OR-Logistics@dsto.defence.gov.au

RESEARCH & RESEARCH TRAINING OFFICE
REPORT
Research Funding Opportunities for You from the JSF
The Briefing seminar slides on the Joint Strike Fighter R & D Opportunities presented by AIRCDRE John Harvey are available for download from
http://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/units/research/seminar%20abstracts/JSF_seminar_slides.pdf
The Defence New Air Combat Capability (NACC) is actively seeking any research proposals from university researchers and they will determine whether these proposals will be of interest to the JSF project. As the JSF project is multi-disciplinary, research that you think might not be applicable could be highly relevant to people closely managing the project. I, therefore, would strongly encourage you to submit a research proposal on what you are already doing in your own field and let the NACC decide whether it is relevant. The key dates and requirements (as given on page 40 of the briefing slides) to observe are:
21 August One page proposal summary and QUAD Chart
4-8 Sept Presentations of your proposals (tentatively set as 10 minute talks)
Dr Rhyll Vallis, Business Manager of the Defence & Security Applications Research Centre, will be coordinating submission of proposals from UNSW@ADFA. Please submit your proposals to Rhyll by 14 August. Her contact details are: Room 365 in Building 21, x89555, r.vallis@adfa.edu.au

Simultaneous measurement of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of fluids using a transient hot-wire instrument
Abstract:
The transient hot-wire technique is a reliable and precise method for experimental measurement of thermophysical properties of fluids. Refinement of this technique at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) has demonstrated the capability for an accurate and simultaneous measurement of the thermal conductivity and the thermal diffusivity together with a determination of the specific heat provided an appropriate equation of state is available. The measurement system developed at UNB is described in detail. The experimental system includes a hot-wire cell constructed with 12.7 micron diameter platinum wire which is submerged vertically in a test fluid. Measurement of the transient temperature rise of the wire in response to a step current through it allows an accurate and rapid determination of the thermal properties of the surrounding fluid. The system includes a pressurizing system and an isothermal block to achieve desired test conditions over a wide range of temperature and pressure. In order to demonstrate the accuracy of measurement with this system, results obtained for nitrogen are compared with available data. Measurements on propane, toluene and argon are used to show the influence of radiation effect with this instrument. It is clearly seen, for the first time, that there is influence of thermal radiation in the measurements obtained with this instrument for propane. The thermal conductivity of other fluids obtained with this instrument is also presented.
