Message from the Rector

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the opening of the 14 th International Space planes and Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference here in Canberra. The conference was hosted by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and The Australian Hypersonics Initiative in which we are a partner institution. I would like to congratulate Dr Russell Boyce and his team on a highly successful event.

The conference was followed up on Friday with the signing of an agreement between the the Australian Government through the Australian Hypersonics Initiative and the US Air Force. This agreement - The Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation (HIFiRE) project, is worth more than $54 million US dollars. The Defence Science and Technology Organisation will take the major lead but will also include key staff from  both UNSW@ADFA and The University of Queensland. Congratulations to all staff who have been involved in this project.

I would like to remind staff that our Degree Conferral Ceremonies will be held on Wednesday 13 December 2006. Participating in our graduation ceremonies gives you the opportunity to be involved in one of the happiest and most memorable occasions of a student's life at UNSW. RESEARCH & RESEARCH TRAINING OFFICE REPORT

Faculty Research Grant Committee: selection outcomes

On Friday 3 November the Faculty Research Grants Committee (FRGC) met to assess applications for funding under a range of funding schemes. Members of the FRGC are: Professor Ian Petersen, A/g Associate Dean (Research), (Chair), Professor Brian Lees, A/Prof Aurelia George-Mulgan, Dr Krishna Shankar, Dr Valeri Ougrinovski, Dr Twan Huybers and Dr Harvi Sidhu.

On behalf of all UNSW@ADFA applicants, Professor John Baird (Rector) thanks all members of the FRGC. Prof Baird is fully aware of the time and effort the FRGC has devoted to the assessment of research applications across a wide range of funding schemes. The voluntary contribution of significant amounts of time to this highly important undertaking by the FRGC has made a substantial contribution to the promotion of both our research activities and the encouragement of our early career researchers.

Defence Related Research Grants: ADFA Research Committee endorses funding recommendations

The second meeting of the ADFA Research Committee was held on 10 November 2006. The membership of the committee comprises equal representations from UNSW@ADFA and the Australian Defence Force. The three main functions of the committee are to:

  • consider Defence related research activities currently undertaken at UNSW@ADFA with a view to gain transparency, to confirm relevance of current Defence related elements and/or components of research, and to identify emerging themes for research;
  • provide Defence with a forum to collaborate with UNSW@ADFA on emerging issues within Defence that could be addressed by research undertaken at UNSW@ADFA. Such issues would be prioritised by the Committee and detailed at the Annual Triennium Review each year.
  • review and approve recommendations made by UNSW@ADFA Faculty Research Grants Committee for funding under the Defence-Related Research Funding Scheme, and allocate grants based on those recommendations in amounts not exceeding $20,000 per project, up to a total of $100,000 per annum provided by UNSW@ADFA.

The Defence Related Research Funding Scheme (DRR) was established to support full-time academic staff to pursue Defence-related research for well-defined projects having an identifiable set of outcomes.

Applications for funding under the DRR scheme were assessed by the Faculty Research Grants Committee (FRGC) and endorsed by the ADFA Research Committee. The following eight projects totalling $100,000 were approved for funding to commence in 2006.

  • support cross-disciplinary research;
  • support research by staff whose research careers have been interrupted and who have the potential for successful re-activation;
  • support research by new staff;

UNSW@ADFA Faculty Seminars

The Faculty Seminar Series in 2006 was a resounding success with only standing (or bench-sitting) room remaining on a number of occasions. Professor John Baird (Rector) would like to express his appreciation to Professor David Lovell, Professor Brian Lees, A/Professor Hussein Abbass, Professor Peter Dennis, Professor Joseph Lai, Em. Professor Greg Jackson, Professor Ian Petersen and A/Professor Jacky Croke for the time they have taken in preparing their seminars and sharing information about their research with other academics on campus.

The Faculty Seminar Series is a great way to disseminate information about research undertaken at UNSW@ADFA across all disciplines and has led to collaborative efforts and networking across a very wide range of research areas. Planning has already commenced for the 2007 seminars, and topics will range from research areas as diverse as Rare-Earth Magnetism, 'Non-lethal' Weapons and the Occupation of Iraq, to Drugs in Sport.

If there is research currently being undertaken on campus about which you would like to know more, or if you would like to hear the outcomes of a particular project, please let the RRTO know. We will then endeavour to put our highly effective arm-twisting expertise to use in encouraging relevant researchers to volunteer to present their findings in a future Faculty Seminar.
