Message from the Rector
Acting Rector
I will be on leave for two weeks commencing Monday 23 October, returning on Monday 6 November. During my absence Professor John Arnold will be the Acting Rector.
ADFA Commandant-Rector Golf Challenge
The second round of the ADFA Commandant-Rector Golf Challenge was held on Friday 13 October at Fairbairn Golf Club.
A sumptious bbq lunch commenced the proceedings and 17 pairs took to the golf course for a nine hole Ambrose competition. Some 25 Defence members and 12 UNSW staff took part. It was a hot and windy afternoon for golf, but a good time was enjoyed by all present. The drinks cart (soft only) did a roaring business around the course during play.
Individual pairs winners of the Ambrose competition were Fred Semmler and Paul Holstein playing for Defence, and Wayne Jealous and Barry Freebody for the University.
Defence fielded the bigger and stronger team and were the overall winners of the Challenge Trophy with a 40.4 stroke average per team over UNSW at 38.6 – thus pretty close.
A great range of prizes were awarded for longest drive, nearest to the pin on two holes, and the Bradman score. The support of Drummond Golf, Newcastle Street , Fyshwick with the prizes is gratefully acknowledged.
The Challenge will continue in 2007. The first round will be scheduled in April or May, and the return match again in October.

Major Mick Coad, representing the Defence team, accepts the Trophy from Professor Baird
Our thanks go to Prof. Stephen Yeomans and Tess Blakers for their outstanding organisation of this most successful event.
Professor John Baird
Rector

Congratulations to A/Prof Hans Riesen from PEMS on successful ARC Discovery Grant
Professor John Baird (Rector) and Professor Ian Petersen A/g Associate Dean (Research) extend their sincere congratulations to Associate Professor Hans Riesen of the School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences (PEMS) on his success in winning an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant. As all researchers know, winning a Discovery grant is quite an achievement at the best of times – this year it is even more of an achievement as the success rates were the lowest they have been since the establishment of the Discovery Project funding scheme.
Project Title Highly efficient X-ray storage phosphor for medical and scientific imaging: $270,000
Summary: X-rays are invaluable in medical diagnostics. For example, they are widely used in breast screening programs. However, they can cause cancer even at low doses. Consequently there is a global effort to reduce the X-ray dose by exploring more efficient imaging technologies. The present proposal seeks to exploit our recent discovery of a highly efficient storage phosphor that has the potential to facilitate substantial X-ray dose reduction; this is of greatest significance to the general population. Also, the phosphor facilitates higher resolution images, a feature that is highly important in scientific imaging. This project may lead to substantial revenue streams for the nation because it taps into a global multibillion dollar industry.

UNSW@ADFA involvement with successful LIEF projects
The Australian Research Council's Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (LIEF) program encourages institutions to develop collaborative arrangements among themselves, across the higher education sector and with organisations outside the sector, in order to develop research infrastructure. The scheme supports large-scale cooperative initiatives involving two or more institutions, thereby allowing expensive facilities to be shared, enhances support for areas of research strength and ensures that researchers in fields of recognised research potential have access to the support necessary for development of their projects.
Emeritus Professor Stewart Cambell of PEMS was part of a successful project led by Professor S X Dou of the University of Wollongong titled 16 Tesla Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS ) which was allocated $400,000.
Summary Success of this proposal will enhance national and international collaboration through access to the proposed 16-Tesla PPMS by a large number of collaborating groups. This state-of-the-art facility will substantially enhance the materials characterisation capability of Australia. Equipped with this 16-Tesla PPMS and other related facilities the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials at the University of Wollongong will continue as an important national and international centre for physical property characterisation. It will allow Australian researchers to remain competitive in this important of materials research.
Congratulations also go to Professors Bruce Bennett and Paul Eggert of H&SS who were involved in the successful LIEF project titled AustLit: Phase Two - humanities research infrastructure development, augmentation and expansion . This project was led by Professor John Hay of the University of Queensland and was allocated $350.000.
Summary: With ARC support, the university and library collaborators will deliver a unique national information service revealing the wealth of Australian's literary and cultural endeavours over time. Enquirers from across the research, education and library sectors will be able to access the results of decades of scholarship in Australian literary, theatre, critical and Indigenous culture. Senior and emerging researchers will be able to continue building AustLit over time, using the infrastructure as a source of existing information to interrogate, and as a repository for new data that can be analysed and enhanced as research in new areas is pursued.

Research Day 2006 on October 31
Preparations for the annual UNSW@ADFA Research Day are well under way, and if the abstracts received by the Research and Research Training Office (RRTO) are any indication, it should be a very interesting and informative morning of presentations indeed! We are also pleased to announce that we have received in excess of one hundred registrations for attendance on the day.
The afternoon of Research Day will consist of two workshops. One workshop is aimed at postgraduate research students and will be presented by Professor Margaret Harding, Dean of the UNSW Graduate Research School and members of her team from the GRS. There will also be an ‘Effective Supervision Workshop' for supervisors of postgraduate research students.
The program for Research Day may be found at http://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/units/research/researchday/index.html
The highlight of the day will be the awarding of prizes for the Best Poster and Best Presentation.
Presentations will be judged by Professor Sue Thomas : PVC and Vice President, Division of Health, Design and Science, University of Canberra; Professor Hans Bachor : Director, ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum-atom Optics, ANU; and Professor Tessa Morris-Suzuki : Professor of Japanese History, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, ANU.
