Michael Hush received his PhD from the ANU where he was awarded a University Medal for Theoretical Physics. He is a lecturer in the School of Engineering and Information Technology at UNSW Canberra with subject expertise in computer science, electrical engineering and quantum technology.

M-LOOP in control of an ultra-cold atom experiment

Machine learner in control of ultra-cold atoms, a resource for quantum sensors.

Machine learning for quantum technologies: Quantum technologies can potentially change the way we sense, communicate and compute, but they present unique and challenging control problems. Giving a machine learner automated control of a quantum science experiment can potentially allow the machine to develop original solutions to these problems, that an person would never have thought of. This project involves applying the latest developments in reinforcement learning and deep artificial neural networks to cutting-edge quantum science experiments.

Quantum information processing with rare earth ion crystals: Rare earth ion crystals currently hold the world record for the longest coherence time. Coherence is the fundamental resource for performing quantum information processing, making rare earth ions a high quality candidate for a quantum processor. This theoretical project will involve analysing the physics of rare earth ions and applying robust control to perform quantum gates. Excellent results will be deployed in the laboratories of the Rare Earth Quantum Information group at the ANU.

Quantum sensors with ultra-cold atoms: Precision measurement of gravitational and magnetic fields are essential for self-location and navigation. Ultra-cold atoms can be used to simultaneously measure these quantities to an exceptional precision in a compact device. This theoretical project will involve investigate using feedback control to improve the performance of quantum sensors based on ultra-cold atoms. Excellent results will be deployed in the laboratories of the Atomlaser and Quantum Sensors group at the ANU.

Software: Dr Hush is the creator of M-LOOP: the Machine Learning Online Optimisation Package. M-LOOP is easy-to-use and open source, it allows researcher to rapidly automate their quantum (or otherwise) experiments and put a machine learner in charge of their optimisation problems. 

Professional engagement: Dr Hush is the ACT branch chair of the Australian Institute of Physics, which promotes the role of physics in Australia. He is the IT Coordinator for SEIT at UNSW Canberra.

Funding: Dr Hush is working on developing machine learning algorithms for the Defence Science and Technology Group. He is an associate investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems.
