Public Lecture
The Harley Wood lecture is an annual astronomy talk open to the public which is held during the ASA meeting.

Title of Talk:
Star Formation Through Cosmic Time
Abstract :
Why do galaxies look the way they do? To answer this question,
we need to understand both past and present star formation,
as the gas clouds of primordial galaxies is converted into the
stars we see today. I will show, using the fantastic images
collected by the Great Space Observatories as well as our own
theoretical models, how star formation is controlled in the
gaseous dusty disks of galaxies. On a much grander scale, I
will show observations of how massive bursts of star formation
can be triggered either by high-speed galactic collisions or
by the powerful jets which squirt out from the massive Black
Holes which lurk at the cores of most galaxies.
