Biography

I was born in Wollongong NSW, so grew up with the sea and the surf.   As a teenager I read a lot, played the guitar a lot, played hockey and stayed focussed at school.   I first started off studying Medicine at Sydney University and did an Honours Degree in Pathology half-way through. Then decided Mathematics was more attractive than finishing Medicine.

I moved to Wollongong University to do an Honours Degree in Applied Mathematics. The thesis topics: "Flow of blood in the maternal placenta" and "Growth of a plant root" were biologically oriented. I then worked for CSIRO Division of Mathematics and Statistics (now Mathematical and Information Sciences) in Sydney as a Unix sous-guru and mathematical projects. This was for less than a year because during that time I was awarded an Overseas Studentship by Trinity College, Cambridge.

I moved to England so I could do a PhD under the supervision of (then) Dr Tim Pedley. The thesis topic was "Concentration fields near transporting epithelia ", which involved some collaboration with physiologists and zoologists.

After the PhD I returned to Australia to work in the CSIRO Division of Environmental Mechanics in Canberra with Dr John Philip as Chief. This was an interesting experience. Two years later I applied for a lectureship at ADFA and have worked at ADFA ever since.
