The following are some key research areas pursued in the School.

  • Institution building in fragile states
    Research in the School in this area is especially focused on applied analysis and the implications of both theory and empirics for the development of public policy.
  • Leadership
    Research in leadership in the School is especially concerned with: strategic leadership, transformational behaviours, and followership.
  • Defence economics and management
    Research in this area includes research on: defence specific procurement, innovation, project management, logistics and supply chains - notably with regard to the market for small arms.
  • Management of Performance Enhancement in Sport
    Research focuses on managing the role of performance enhancing technologies in sport (e.g. doping, swim suits, training techniques) both in terms of athlete responses to the technologies (e.g. decisions to dope) and policy (e.g. the economics of doping). 
  • Economic and management aspects of innovation
    Research in the School covers innovation theory as well as applied research and public policy formation.
  • Decision making analysis
    Research in this area encompasses the theory of rational and behavioural decision making, and applied studies in a variety of decision environments.
  • Public Policy and Public Management
    Research in this area focuses on systems thinking and public policy and the analysis of complex policy and management issues.
  • Human Resource Management and Employment Relations
    Research in this area includes public sector human resource practices, such as performance management systems, Defence Force remuneration, enhancing the effectiveness of human resource practitioners, agency bargaining arrangements in the Australian Public Service, diversity management and occupational health and safety issues.
