I received the undergarduate degree in Applied Mathematics and the PhD degree in Physics and Mathematics from the State University of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, in 1982 and 1990, respectively.

From 1982 to 1995, I held research positions with the Radiophysical Research Institute, Nizhny Novgorod. From 1995 to 1996, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Haifa, Israel. In 1996 I joined the University of New South Wales in Canberra, Australia, where I am currently full Professor in the School of Engineering and Information Technology. I held visiting appointments at the Australian National University (2005 and 2012), Stuttgart University (2013) and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2014).

I am an Associate Editor for Automatica and IET Control Theory and Applications. My current research interests include decentralized and distributed control, stability of quantum control systems, stochastic control and filtering theory, robust control theory.
