Squadron Leader Evan Smith, PhD, joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 2001 and completed his bachelor degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the Australian Defence Force Academy, University of New South Wales. He then went on to receive the degree of Master of Science in Thermal Power from Cranfield University in 2010 under sponsorship from the Royal Australian Air Force. Squadron Leader Smith is now the Visiting Military Fellow at the University of New South Wales, Australian Defence Force Academy.

Dr Smith uses numerical and experimental methods to study how jet engines bend after they are turned off, otherwise known as gas turbine compressor rotor thermal bow. He uses simplified analogue models run in conjugate heat transfer (CHT) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with finite element analysis (FEA) to investigate thermal bow of engines at a parametric level. He recently completed his PhD thesis, titled "A parametric study of compressor rotor thermal bow in aerospace gas turbines". 

In 2018, Squadron Leader Smith will be posted to RAAF Base Amberley as the Senior Engineering Officer of 36 Squadron, which operates the RAAF's C-17A Globemaster III.
