UNSW historian comments on electorate name

The Australian Electoral Commission has proposed that the third ACT House of representatives electorate be named after the historian Charles Bean. The idea attracted a letter in the Canberra Times opposing the proposal because Bean had been anti-Semitic in intriguing against john Monash as commander of the Australian Corps in 1918. UNSW Canberra historian Prof. Peter Stanley, who last year edited a book of essays about Bean and official history, wrote to the newspaper arguing that because Bean changed his mind on the matter 9and others) he was a good model. The letter appeared in the Canberra Times on 14 April.
