The University of New South Wales (UNSW) Canberra has launched its first miniature satellite into orbit from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

The Buccaneer satellite, about the size of a shoe box, is paving the way for the growth of Australia’s emerging space industry. The spacecraft will help calibrate Australia’s groundbreaking Jindalee over the horizon radar as well as providing crucial data on predicting orbits of space objects including space “junk”. Avoiding collisions in space is essential for safeguarding the space based technologies upon which we all depend.
