Application to Withdraw from a Course/s Without Fail

Please read before proceeding with your application

Note: The information provided on this page is also included with the Application form in PDF format.

The University of New South Wales has a responsibility to include on its official academic records a true representation of a student's enrolment and progress within the University; this will include the final result (whether a passing or failing grade) in any course for which a student enrols or enrolled.

To avoid academic and financial penalty a student must withdraw before the relevant Census Date:

  • 31 March, for first session courses and year long courses commencing first session.

  • 31 August, for second session courses and year long courses commencing in second session.
To avoid academic penalty (a financial liability remains for any withdrawal past the relevant Census Date) a student must withdraw before:

  • 23 April, for first session courses and year long courses commencing in first session.

  • 10 September, for second session courses and year long courses commencing in secong session.
Students who withdraw after the Census Date but on or before theses dates are able to withdraw from courses via myUNSW and permission from the Manager of Student Administrative Services is not required. A grade of NF (no fail) will be recorded against the course but the course will be listed on the academic record.

Withdrawal from courses without academic and/or financial penalty after the Census Date will only be granded in EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES:

In exceptional cases it is appropriate for students to apply for withdrawal from courses without academic and/or financial penalty after the Census Date. The following guidelines will be adopted by the Manager of Student Administrative Services (acting as the Registrar's Nominee at UNSW@ADFA) when considering applications to withdraw from courses or programs on application by a student after the deadlines outlined above:

The following would normally constitute acceptable grounds for granting withdrawal without fail after the due date:

  • A serious health problem, or the onset of a chronic health problem since the due date, as evidenced by medical certificates (e.g. car accident, hospitalisation/recovery from hospitalisation, chronic viral infection).

  • Serious personal trauma as evidenced by medical certificates and/or personal declaration.

  • Demonstrable change in personal circumstances since the due date, as supported by personal declaration and other relevant material (e.g., additional employment demands; short-notice postings; severe financial stress; onset of severe illness in an immediate family member).

  • Evidence that the student is having difficulty with the transition to University level studies or has made an incorrect program choice.
The following are not acceptable grounds for granting withdrawal without fail after the relevant date:

  • Failure to prepare adequately for assessment requirements.

  • Not remembering to cancel enrolment in a course.

  • Demonstrable change in personal circumstances prior to the due date.

  • Not realising that the student was enrolled in a particular course.
