Guidelines

The Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) is the largest scholarship program for local research students. The APA scheme is administered by UNSW and funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

The University Postgraduate Awards (UPA) along with the APA is one of the largest scholarship programs for local research students. The UPA scheme is administered and funded by UNSW.

The scholarships are awarded to Australian residents to support postgraduate studies by research on the basis of academic merit, referees' reports, research experience and research potential.

The annual stipend for 2009 is AUD $20,427 per annum. The stipend is paid in fortnightly instalments. (Also refer to UCPRS Top-Up). The awards are provided for three years for a PhD and two years for a Masters by Research.

A PhD candidate may apply for an extension of six months provided that the grounds are related to the study and beyond the student’s control. No extensions are possible for Masters by Research students.

Guidelines

The largest scholarship program for international research students is the International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) scheme. The IPRS scheme is administered by UNSW and funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and UNSW.

The IPRS is a prestigious scholarship which provides international postgraduate research students with tuition fees, overseas student health cover (OSHC) for students and their dependants, visa charges (except costs related to visa health checks), travel concessions and a living allowance stipend of AUD $20,000.

The University International Postgraduate Award (UIPA) is a large scholarship program for international research students. The UIPA scheme is administered and funded by UNSW.

The UIPA scholarship facilitates research by providing international postgraduate research students with tuition fees and a living allowance stipend of AUD $20,000. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) will be provided by University College for students wishing to study at UNSW.

The University may grant PhD IPRS/UIPA holders an extension of a maximum of 6 months if their research is adversely affected by circumstances beyond their control and provided the candidate is making satisfactory progress. No extensions are possible for Masters by Research students.

The stipend is paid in fortnightly instalments. (Also refer to UCPRS Top-Up). The awards are provided for three years for a PhD and two years for a Masters by Research.

University College Postgraduate Research Scholarship (UCPRS)
Guidelines

This scholarship is awarded and administered by the University College to support students (both international and local) to undertake a postgraduate research degree at UNSW@ADFA.

The annual stipend for 2009 is AUD$20,427 per annum as per the APA rate. An additional AUD$1,200 per annum is paid as a top-up. The stipend is paid in fortnightly instalments.

Note:There is no application for this scholarship. Applicants who apply for APA/UPA or IPRS/UIPA will be automatically considered for a UCPRS.

Prospective students with outstanding performance (roughly equivalent to the top 40% of first class Hons students) may be eligible for an out of session UCPRS offer.

University College Postgraduate Research Scholarship Top-Up (UCPRS - Top Up)

A top-up of AUD$1,200 per annum is paid to all UCPRS award holders. Award holders in receipt of a APA & UPA will also receive a top-up of AUD$1,200 pa to bring them in line with the UCPRS. EIPRS or UIPA award holders will also receive a top-up of up to AUD$1,200 pa should their living stipend be below the UCPRS amount.

Awarded to a female student in a non-traditional area of study at the UCPRS rate. Applicants for APA, UPA, EIPRS, UIPA or UCPRS are automatically considered for this scholarship.

An Establishment Scholarship of $1,000 will be provided to commencing higher degree research scholarship students at the beginning of their candidature at UNSW@ADFA

  Guidelines

School Supplementary Award with a value of up to $12,000 pa (taxable) may be available to holders of one of these primary awards: APA, UPA, UCPRS, University College Equity Scholarship, Research Training Scholarship and Defence & Security Applications Research Centre Scholarship.

Support for China Scholarship Council (CSC) Sponsored Students
UNSW@ADFA will provide a top-up scholarship of $10,000 per annum including Overseas Student Health Cover to each CSC sponsored PhD student from Ocean University of China, South China University of Technology and Tianjin University.

Sudents who have completed at least the equivalent of three years full-time study towards their first degree in an Australian University are eligible to apply.

This program provides an opportunity for students to interact with active researchers to gain research skills, learn how to present research results and test their abilities in a particular area of research. This interaction is aimed at informing the students' decisions regarding further higher degree studies.
