Elena Sitnikova, PhD, BE (Hons), CSSLPSFHEA  is an award-winning academic and researcher; and Program Coordinator for the Masters in Cyber Security suites of programs within UNSW Canberra Cyber centre at the School of Engineering and Information Technology at the at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA). She is a global leader for cutting-edge research in Critical Infrastructure protection with a current focus on intrusion detection for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems cyber security, cyber-physical systems and industrial IoT (IIoT).  Given the increasing number of cyber-attacks globally, Elena’s research explores systems resilience and the use of artificial intelligence in the analytics of abnormal data that may affect critical systems. Her contribution in the field is demonstrated through the recent Spitfire Memorial Defence Fellowship Award.

Elena is among the first Australians to be certified in CSSLP - Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional, issued by (ISC)2 International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium.  She is a recognised expert in excellence in higher education, holding a UK-based Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and an Australian Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Team Citation award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.

Elena is affiliated internationally as an Adjunct Associate Professor within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH), USA; and as an adjunct staff member at the School of IT and Mathematical Sciences (ITMS) at the University of South Australia (UniSA).

Elena also has IT industry experience working as a senior software engineer with the Motorola Australia Global Software Group. Prior to migrating to Australia, she worked for the space project Buran; the results of her research were implemented at “Energia“(The Russian Space Research Centre in Moscow, Russia).

Current Research Topics and Interests

  • Critical Infrastructure protection with a current focus on intrusion detection for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems cyber security,
  • Cyber-physical systems and industrial IoT (IIoT). 
  • Systems resilience and the use of artificial intelligence in the analytics of abnormal data that may affect critical systems.
