ABOUT THE BOOK

Since 1967 more than 25,000 students have graduated from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) after studying at HMAS Creswell, Duntroon and the Defence Force Academy. In Widening Minds, Tom Frame examines the productive 50-year relationship between UNSW and the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
In a candid exploration of the highs and lows of the most enduring educational partnership in Australian history, this ‘insider’ account traces the evolution of officer education since 1901, the emerging need during the Vietnam War for junior officers to obtain university qualifications , the controversial decision to create the ADF Academy, the subsequent development of undergraduate and postgraduate programs, the University’s response to cadet misconduct controversies and its consistent efforts to raise educational standards and the quality of intellectual debate across the Defence community.
