Appointment of Rear Admiral Peter R. Sinclair as Commandant - subsequently Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, then Governor of NSW
Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair was educated at the RAN College and the Royal College of Defence Studies (United Kingdom) and served in various staff and command capacities in numerous Australian and British warships. He was Director of Naval Plans from 1979-198; Director General of the Military Staff Branch Strategic and International Policy Division Department of Defence from 1980-1982; Chief of Staff and Deputy to the Naval Support Commander from 1983-1984.
He was promoted Rear Admiral in July 1984 to become the Commandant and the third, and last, chief project officer of the new Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Australia Day 1986 Honours List 'For service to the Royal Australian Navy, particularly as the first Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Academy'. In 1989, Rear Admiral Sinclair was appointed as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff before retiring from the RAN after nearly 42 years of service. He was then appointed the 35th Governor of New South Wales Governor from August 1990 to February 1996, and was promoted to be a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1992.
