Introduction to Capability Management
Gain an understanding of the processes and practices associated with the development and management of capability and capability systems, including the major aspects of capability systems development including systems acquisition, project management, systems engineering, requirements engineering, and conceptual design. You are introduced to the principal capability development artifacts: the operational concept document (OCD), function and performance specification (FPS), and the test & evaluation master plan (TEMP). Practical experience is provided with the development of a number of elements of the capability development documents.
Introduction to Systems Engineering
Gain an understanding of the processes and management practices associated with the systems engineering discipline. The course highlights how systems engineering principles can be applied to technical projects, and what products to expect from the systems engineering effort. The course is equally suited to engineers who are new to the discipline, as well as to project managers and project staff who work with systems engineers. The course also provides an excellent introduction to the workshop, Systems Engineering Practice, which is conducted on the following two days.
Systems Engineering Practice
Immediately following our Introduction to Systems Engineering course, Systems Engineering Practice is a two-day practical workshop that reinforces the material introduced in that course. In addition to providing further detail on the early stages of system design, Systems Engineering Practice presents a series of simulated design exercises that allow attendees to apply knowledge of systems engineering processes and management to a real-life system development. The exercise is conducted as a combination of tutorials and activities that step through the early system life cycle, focusing on conceptual design and preliminary design. Throughout the exercises, realistic development issues are introduced.
Good requirements practices are essential if complex systems are to be developed to meet users' expectations without being delivered late and over-budget. The Requirements Practice short course provides a broad overview of all aspects of requirements engineering, without focusing on any particular detailed technique or tool (although the requirements for those approaches and applications are clearly identified). The course has a strong practical element, both in terms of the introduction to the topic, as well as formal practice through exercises.
Addressing Complex Problems
This short course introduces the most appropriate ways of visualising the interrelationships between the various parts of real-world problems, from straightforward well-behaved problems to those problems that continually change over time and are resistant to corrective action. The course provides solid foundations for developing strategies and managing problems including those for which conventional reductionist ways of thinking are totally ineffective.
Introduction to Project Management
Gain an understanding of the processes and management practices associated with the profession of project management. We introduce the project management body of knowledge in an easy-to-understand manner. The third day of the course contains a number of practical exercises to reinforce attendees understanding of project management and to allow them to apply the project management body of knowledge to real-life projects. The exercises are conducted as a combination of tutorials and activities that step through the various project management activities, focussing on integration, scope, cost, and schedule management.
Need Statement Development
Apply the systems engineering process as it maps to the development of the Operational Concept Document (OCD), including tailoring for your organisation and Capability Assurance/Capability Alignment Projects (CAP). After a brief review of systems acquisition and conceptual design processes, attendees will participate in a series of design exercises and tutorials focused on the development of an OCD for your specific organisation and project or projects.
Function and Performance Specification Development
Gain an understanding of the practical application of the systems engineering process as it maps to the development of Function and Performance Specification (FPS). You will focus on a series of design exercises and tutorials that apply knowledge of systems engineering processes and management to the development of an FPS for your specific project or projects.
