Daiana Seabra Venancio, a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) at UNSW Canberra, is researching the use of autonomous vehicles (AUVs) in seabed mining and the potential environmental impact of this technology. 

The background discussion of her research is the current focus on sustainable development and responsible resource extraction due to climate change and the need to access minerals necessary to develop technologies that will reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Although AUVs have the potential to revolutionize the seabed mining industry, it is crucial to carefully evaluate the possible issues caused by vehicles controlled by artificial intelligence in the marine environment. Daiana's research is particularly significant in addressing these critical issues. 

She holds a solid academic background, with an undergraduate and Master of Laws from the prestigious Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) in Brazil. In addition, her experience teaching and researching International Law, Environmental Law, and the Law of the Sea equipped her with the necessary skills and expertise to undertake this transdisciplinary research project.
