Future leaders inspired at Young Leaders Breakfast
High-school students from across Canberra gathered at the National Press Club last Friday to hear from inspirational leaders from the local community. The inaugural Young Leaders Breakfast is an initiative by AFL Canberra and presented by UNSW Canberra.
Aimed at girls in year 10, the breakfast was held to recognise and celebrate the important roles that women play in society, and support the students as they begin to take the next steps in deciding their future careers.
A number of speakers, including MLA Bec Cody, and CEO of HerCanberra Amanda Whitley addressed the students, encouraging them to consider how their current high-school experience will shape their future.
The theme of the messages from the morning focused on living in the moment, seizing opportunities, and working hard.
UNSW Canberra Rector Professor Michael Frater opened the breakfast.
“Our partnership with AFL Canberra means that we get to support young women across Canberra in finding their passion,” he said.
“At UNSW Canberra, we recognise the importance of providing the information that high school students need as they enter the next steps of their life.”
Throughout the morning attendees were able to participate in a number of activities including discussion with a panel of leaders from the Canberra community, and a lucky door prize to win a signed GWS Giants jersey.
Following on from International Women’s Day in the previous week, many panellists referenced the need for balance, and for women to ensure they’re making time for themselves despite the challenges of a modern lifestyle.
With the event receiving great interest, it is hoped it will be able to continue in 2020 and the years to follow.
