Message from the Head of School
We help shape the minds that shape Australia, the region and the international community. Our programs address contemporary defence and security issues of importance in Australia in their political, economic, strategic, ethical, legal, cultural and historical context.
The School is recognised for academic excellence in both research and teaching:
- Our undergraduate programs are for trainee officers in the Australian Defence Force in the disciplines of English and Media Studies, History, Indonesian Studies, and International and Political Studies.
- Our postgraduate coursework programs are fully online, and open to Defence and civilian students, with specialities including War Studies, Cyber-Security, and Strategy and Security.
- We welcome applications to undertake higher degrees by research.
We are also internationally recognised for our exciting, innovative research. Our interdisciplinary research groups provide thought leadership and new insights on key challenges in the areas of Asia-Pacific Development and Security, Conflict and Society, Environment and Governance, Future Operations, International Ethics, and Maritime Security.
We offer an outstanding education and student experience for our unique and diverse student population. The School enjoys the highest rate of student satisfaction for our teaching and courses. Our campus at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra includes quiet research facilities, one of the world’s top three military history and strategic studies libraries, and special collections of Australian literature and history.
Through social engagement including partnerships, collaborations in research and teaching, and continual knowledge exchange, we lead debate and contribute to national and global change.
We explore complex international issues, including issues directly relevant to Australia’s national security and international standing. In doing so, we enrich understanding of countries of strategic importance to Australia.
We are proud to be part of this global university with global impact.
