Inspection of Midshipmen and Officer Cadets Accommodation

Come and have a look at where our Midshipmen and Officer Cadets live whilst at ADFA. Tours depart every 30 minutes near the Academy Cadets Mess and bookings are essential on the day.

Navy Hydrographic and Meteorological Branch Display

Meet the Navy's Maritime Military Geospatial professionals.
Hydrographic specialists are trained in capturing hydrographic Military Geospatial Information. Come and see the portable survey equipment which is used to maximise tactical advantage during operations. Launch
a weather balloon and learn how the environment plays a critical role in all military operations. See how submarines can use the temperature of the ocean to hide from ships, and how state of the art ocean and atmospheric modelling helps to determine the best times for amphibious landings.

Army Unmanned Aerial Systems

The Army is Australia's biggest user of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), or drones. Army flies hundreds of missions every year. Come and talk to Army UAS Operators about how they use drones in tactical missions, and watch the Army Drone Racing Team demonstrations to see some of the fun we have in our spare time.

Academy Racing Car (static display)

Learn how Midshipmen and Officer Cadets use their technical, management and leadership skills to design, build, test and race a Formula SAE racing car. This project requires goals to be set, goals
to be translated into specifications, and then designs to be developed against those specifications. The designs are realised to create a fully functional racing car.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Display

On display in front of building 17 are examples of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) developed by staff and students at UNSW Canberra. A fixed wing UAV, developed by the UNSW Canberra UAV team will be shown. Visitors will be able to find out how to design, build and operate an UAV. Members of the team, which his primarily made up of Midshipmen, Officer Cadets and Advanced Students will be available to answer questions.

John Howard Reading Room

The Academy Library is home to the John Howard Reading Room, in recognition of Australia's 25th and second-longest serving Prime Minister. Media releases, statements, pictures and posters are on display, including furniture from the former Prime Minister's office. You can meet the Director of the UNSW Canberra Howard Library being established at Old Parliament House and obtain information about future events. Be sure to take a 'selfie' sitting in the famous green chesterfield office chairs.


AIF Database-find your family in WW1

Call up an Anzac! Do you want to find out about a family member who served in the Great War? The AIF database is an on-line resource detailing the experience of some 340,000 members of the Australian Imperial Force who served overseas. The NZEF database will also be available for searching. On Open Day you can use the advanced search engine and see how many different sources have been integrated to produce the most comprehensive profile of the AIF available anywhere.
