Dr Mahmud Ashraf

Mahmud currently holds a visiting Associate Professorial role in UNSW Canberra. He is an Associate Professor in Structural Engineering at the School of Engineering in Deakin University (Waurn Ponds Campus). Prior to joining Deakin University in 2017, Mahmud held a number leadership roles in the School of Engineering and Information Technology (SEIT) at UNSW Canberra. He also held academic positions in the University of Queensland, Australia and in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. 

His research interests are primarily related to investigating the structural behaviour of thin-walled metallic structures in a variety of loading conditions including cyclic and impact/blast loading. Recently, he is looking into the structural integrity of 3D printed metallic micro-lattice materials. He has published over 100 technical papers in the areas of stainless steel, high strength steel and aluminium structures. His research activities are funded by industry, government institutes and university grants.  

Mahmud is an assessor of various grant schemes including Australian Research Council (ARC). He is a regular reviewer of a number of leading engineering journals including Engineering Structures, Journal of Constructional Steel Research Proceedings of ICE - Bridge Engineering, Proceedings of ICE - Structures and Buildings, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, Advanced Steel Construction - An International Journal.

Mahmud was awarded a number of research fellowships including Confucius Research Fellowship and William Mong Research Fellowship, and was a recipient of prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship. 

Mahmud is a highly motivated lecturer who loves to interact with students and has effectively managed very large classes. His teaching efforts have always been praised by his students as well as his peers, and he received recognition from the faculty and the university level both at the The University of Queensland and The University of New South Wales. He played key roles in developing innovative course curriculum and his main teaching responsibilities include Engineering Mechanics, Mechanics of Materials and Design of Steel Structures.
