Microwave and Millimetre-wave Metasurfaces
Metasurfaces are a promising new area of science and technology for the manipulation of electromagnetic waves. They have the potential to replace bulky devices such as lenses with a thin layer of patterned elements, to enable a wave to undergo focussing, steering, polarisation conversation and more general spatial/temporal filtering.
The microwave frequency range is the basis of much mobile and satellite communications and radar technology, also having applications in sensing and imaging. The ability to manipulate waves in this frequency range is thus of great practical importance. Extending metasurfaces into the millimetre frequency range will enable them to be applied to the next generation of these technologies. This project can encompass analytical procedures for the synthesis of metasurfaces, numerical procedures for their design, and experimental techniques for fabrication and measurement.
